This Per Diem Sr. Lab Assistant position in the Blood Bank is an exciting opportunity to support the daily operations of the laboratory. The role involves providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support, including specimen management and processing, ordering and receiving inventory, instrument maintenance, intake/accessioning, and communication with providers and other laboratories.

Requirements

  • High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
  • Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid.
  • Laboratory experience including Intake/Accessioning.
  • Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors Degree.
  • 1+ years of experience in a Laboratory setting.
  • 1+ years of experience in intake/accessioning.

Responsibilities

  • Screening and accessioning specimens in the LIS as described in the Lab Assistant Job Description.
  • Maintaining an adequate supply of general laboratory items, department-specific reagents, and materials needed for specimen analysis.
  • Communicating the need for additional supplies to the supervisor/manager.
  • Ensuring the proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials.
  • Receiving all delivered goods and documenting according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Understanding specimen requirements, communicating them to providers, and documenting sample cancellations or rejections.
  • Assuring specimen quality prior to processing.
  • Calling providers to confirm or clarify requests, and modifying/placing orders as required.
  • Performing front-end processing of all samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placing samples on automated test platforms.
  • Performing back-end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and disposal according to policy.
  • Properly disposing of all regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste.
  • Cleaning all laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment in accordance with laboratory protocols and documenting as required.
  • Maintaining logs for temperature and humidity for assigned equipment, work areas, and eye wash stations.
  • Answering the phone and providing assistance to callers regarding specimen requirements, test availability, turnaround times, etc.
  • Accessing automated test platforms to assess the status of test samples.
  • Assisting in blood product modification, such as irradiation and thawing of frozen products.
  • Managing inventory of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and tracking expiration dates.
  • Performing Phlebotomy services for inpatients.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
