About The Position

Academy Sports + Outdoors is seeking a Sr Inventory Accountant to serve as a senior process leader within inventory accounting. This role involves owning complex accounting activities and ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting in accordance with US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements. Key responsibilities include leading month-end and year-end close processes, preparing and reviewing financial statements, and performing advanced analytical reviews to identify trends, anomalies, and risks impacting inventory balances. The role also drives continuous improvement through process enhancements and automation initiatives, utilizing advanced Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Excel capabilities. The Sr Inventory Accountant will lead cross-functional efforts, support audits, and translate financial data into actionable insights. While direct people management is not involved, the role requires influence, expertise, and project leadership to shape inventory accounting processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Advanced knowledge of US GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), and financial controls
  • Experience with large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and complex financial analysis
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis skills, including complex formulas and automation tools
  • Proven ability to lead projects and drive process improvements
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • A team-first attitude
  • Ability to work well under pressure while meeting time-sensitive deadlines
  • Willingness to support business needs outside of normal business hours when required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Regular in-office attendance is required

  • Retail inventory accounting experience preferred
