About The Position

At Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Sr Inventory Accountant will serve as a senior process leader within inventory accounting. This role involves owning complex accounting activities and ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting in accordance with US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements. The position includes leading month-end and year-end close processes, preparing and reviewing financial statements, and performing advanced analytical reviews to identify trends, anomalies, and risks impacting inventory balances. The role drives continuous improvement through process enhancements and automation initiatives, applying advanced Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Excel capabilities to streamline workflows and improve data quality. The Sr Inventory Accountant will lead cross-functional efforts, support audits, and translate financial data into clear, actionable insights that inform business decisions. While direct people management is not part of this role, influence, expertise, and project leadership will shape inventory accounting processes at scale. This role requires collaboration with partners across Inventory Accounting, General Accounting, Finance, and Operations to align on inventory-related financial activity and reporting. The individual will act as a key liaison with auditors and business stakeholders, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and compliance. Collaboration with system and data partners for enhancements, automation, and reporting improvements is also expected. Success depends on strong communication, credibility, and the ability to drive alignment and outcomes through influence and technical leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Advanced knowledge of US GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), and financial controls
  • Experience with large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and complex financial analysis
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis skills, including complex formulas and automation tools
  • Proven ability to lead projects and drive process improvements
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • A team-first attitude
  • Ability to work well under pressure while meeting time-sensitive deadlines
  • Regular in-office attendance is required
  • Acceptable level of hearing and vision to perform job duties
  • Ability to adhere to company policies and professional standards

  • Master’s degree or CPA license strongly preferred
  • Retail inventory accounting experience preferred
