About The Position

The Electric Power Conversion (EPC) organization is responsible for designing the powertrain and energy storage power electronics components in the vehicle. As the EPC Series Engineering Technician, you will be a part of the onsite factory support team responsible for diagnosing routine mechanical and electrical unit-level failures from end of line testing, leading PCBA flashing efforts, building test stations according to engineering assembly drawings, and developing written work instruction to mentor other technicians. The product suite you will work with includes the Traction Inverter, Electric Motor, and Energy Management and Control Unit (EMCU). This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams to resolve complex diagnostic challenges involving both high and low voltage components. This position is based at our Normal, IL factory and reports directly to the Sr. Series Engineer, EPC.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience working on automotive/equipment electrical diagnosis and repair
  • High School Diploma, GED, or other recognized high school equivalency credentials
  • Prior experience in the Automotive industry (Tier 1 or OEM)
  • Demonstrated ability to use structured root-cause analysis techniques to identify and resolve complex component failures
  • Experience using wire termination tooling and soldering
  • General understanding of how to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Basic electrical circuit understanding (DC and AC electronics)
  • Experience reading mechanical drawings or blueprints to check component tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience creating standard work instructions and working in a start-up environment
  • Demonstrated assembly experience utilizing engineering assembly drawings
  • Entry-level experience using an oscilloscope and digital multimeter for measurement
  • Experience working with high and low voltage components/assemblies
  • Handy with tools (mechanical teardown experience)
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects at a time and execute tasks in a timely manner
  • Willingness to work in a strong cross functional environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Visio, and the standard Office suite
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds

Responsibilities

  • End-of-line tester log analysis (reviewing curve-tracer results for unit performance and finding indications for why a unit has failed)
  • Teardown & inspection of mechanical and electronic components
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) manufacturing build trials
  • Support, coach, and mentor other technicians on common failure mode diagnostics
  • Collaborate with Mechanical and Electrical Series Engineers and Technicians to develop a streamlined process for diagnosing End of Line (EOL) failures
  • Wire harness building (crimp-pin termination, soldering, and pin layout wire diagrams)
  • Flashing printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA’s) using Rivian's in-house applications
  • Perform necessary logistics operations such as parts ordering, receiving, and shipping
  • High voltage testing with engineering guidance - high voltage training to be provided
  • Air leak testing and finding the source of an air leak within a drive unit assembly
