About The Position

Clair is dedicated to providing financial freedom to American workers through a digital banking platform that enables instant access to earned wages. They achieve this by integrating their products directly into existing scheduling, workforce management, and payroll applications. As a Senior Engineering Manager, this role is pivotal in balancing rapid execution with sustainable scaling within a quickly growing company. The manager will be responsible for addressing "process debt," streamlining cross-functional workflows, and cultivating an environment where engineers can excel, ultimately optimizing the company's building processes.

Requirements

  • 4–5+ years of direct engineering management experience, ideally leading teams through rapid growth in a series B or C startup.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a scaling startup environment, comfortable with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and building while flying.
  • Highly organized, a systems thinker who centralizes information, cleans up messy workflows, and makes execution easier for everyone, diligently tracking work and informing stakeholders.
  • Strong background in software engineering with technical credibility to guide architectural decisions, provide necessary pushback, and earn team respect (without daily coding).
  • Empathetic leader who deeply cares about the team, cultivates psychological safety, and fosters a culture of open, honest feedback for personal and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage, coach, and grow a team of high-performing engineers, conducting impactful 1:1s, guiding career development, and ensuring team recognition.
  • Apply exceptional organizational skills to engineering operations, identifying bottlenecks, improving documentation standards (like PRDs), and creating clear, lightweight processes.
  • Actively monitor team workloads to ensure sustainable delivery of high-quality work, preventing burnout and maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Serve as a bridge between Engineering, Product, Design, Data, Care, and other teams, ensuring transparent context sharing and preventing decision silos.
  • Encourage the team to experiment with AI and new tooling for efficiency and advocate for time investment in Engineer-led initiatives outside core product roadmaps.
