Sr Engineer - System Engineering

GE Vernova•Schenectady, NY

About The Position

GE Vernova Wind is seeking an experienced professional to work on high-impact fleet issues in a cross-functional engineering discipline. The role balances business and customer technical needs while working toward solutions that consider SQDC. The Senior Engineer independently forms and leads diverse root cause analysis (RCA) teams of subject matter experts and stakeholders in a global matrix organization, ensuring timely and complete resolution of catastrophic turbine or fleet failures. The role applies engineering expertise, problem-solving methods, and project management practices to develop and drive action plans for containment, correction, and prevention of technical problems. It also improves RCA outcomes by applying lessons learned to products, supporting colleagues on other RCAs, leading teams in execution, and driving process improvements. The position assumes ownership of major fleet events, coordinates immediate response and containment, leads assigned 8D RCA efforts, and maintains communication and documentation for internal and external stakeholders, including customers. It coordinates monitoring and investigation across fleets and systems, develops containment actions, identifies safety considerations and stop-the-line recommendations, and guides evidence gathering and root-cause validation. The role also supports supplier recovery, identifies gaps in design and business processes, and develops corrective changes to prevent recurrence across products and platforms. GE Vernova offers a professional work environment, development opportunities, challenging careers, and competitive compensation. U.S.-based compensation is $113,200 to $188,800, with geographic differentials in certain areas and eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus. Employment is limited to candidates legally authorized to work in the United States; offers are conditioned on successful completion of a drug screen as applicable. Relocation assistance is not provided.

  • Ability to analyze the impact of technology choices and explore alternative technologies and approaches to problem solving.
  • Systems engineering mindset for breaking tasks down systematically to produce workable results.
  • Proven analytical and learning skills, including the ability to break down problems, document problem statements, and estimate effort.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in Quality, Project Management, or EHS.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy, particularly the wind industry.
  • Understanding of turbine operability and component failure modes.
  • Awareness of control systems and loads.
  • Ability to program and automate, work with databases, and analyze data to draw outcomes and inferences.

Responsibilities

  • Assume ownership of catastrophic fleet events and work toward immediate site response and containment.
  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, including FPM, O&M, EHS, Safety, Engineering, Communications, Legal, customers, and regional and Wind leadership.
  • Maintain two-way communication with customers about events and next steps, and hand over major events to an RCA leader when further root-cause analysis is needed.
  • Lead the 8D root cause analysis process for assigned major event RCAs, form teams, identify stakeholders and subject matter experts, and establish RCA objectives and expectations.
  • Define technical workstreams, identify owners, agree on task completion dates, and work with leadership to ensure workstreams are effective, on track, and prioritized.
  • Maintain major event checklists and related documentation, including Quality Suite materials, technical underwriting, reports, presentations, and Confluence standard-work materials.
  • Develop and expedite fleet communications and related documentation, such as manuals, work instructions, and TILs.
  • Own internal and customer communications related to major events and RCAs, coordinate stakeholder input, and tailor information and formats to the audience and need.
  • Work with Legal as needed to balance customer relationships and protect GE Vernova intellectual property.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to action plans, drive urgent RCA execution, address execution misses, and help correct course swiftly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support timely execution of major event protocols and RCAs and drive prioritization and rapid execution.
  • Coordinate monitoring of failure modes and effects in target fleets, including impacts on availability, and investigate risks across other fleets and systems or components.
  • Coordinate cross-functional monitoring, inspections, tests, and resource allocation based on asset criticality and customer impact.
  • Engage subject matter experts and stakeholders to assess potential impact and severity and execute a swift response and resolution.
  • Develop and coordinate urgent containment actions to reduce quality costs and customer impact; identify safety considerations and coordinate support to mitigate them.
  • Make stop-the-line recommendations for turbines, manufacturing, suppliers, or other areas and define criteria for resuming operation.
  • Identify root causes and contributing factors using established problem-solving tools, guide subject matter experts in discussions and tool use, and maintain objectivity in developing theories.
  • Balance the need for additional evidence with the need to resolve customer impact quickly; use data, laboratory work, teardowns, and failure turn-on/turn-off methods as appropriate.
  • Guide teams in using new data sources and analysis methods to identify and validate root causes while considering cost and time.
  • Support the Global Commodity Leader with vendor recovery, provide in-depth technical analysis, and participate in supplier discussions as needed.
  • Identify gaps in GE Vernova design and business processes that allowed problems to occur or go undetected, and develop or change processes and designs to prevent recurrence.
  • Assess other platforms for risk and apply corrective actions as needed.
  • Apply engineering and product or operational management judgment to complex tasks and problems; analyze data and use internal and limited external sources to support recommendations.
