Sr. Engineer, AWS Platform
About The Position
Ayar Labs is seeking an experienced AWS engineer to build and operate the computing environment used by their engineers for chip design. The role will primarily focus on AWS, with some systems remaining on local hardware. The engineer will be responsible for migrating workloads to the cloud, ensuring the platform supports chip development demands, and taking projects from initial problem identification through implementation and production. Collaboration with engineering and IT teams will be crucial for making architecture decisions, resolving problems, and improving platform operations. The position includes production support and on-call responsibilities, with support from existing systems administrators.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building and operating production infrastructure.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience with AWS environments.
- Proven track record of designing, deploying, and supporting compute-intensive workloads on AWS.
- Ability to explain implemented solutions, trade-offs made, and results achieved.
- Proficiency in diagnosing complex problems in Linux-based environments and across cloud, network, and storage boundaries.
- Experience resolving production incidents and implementing changes to prevent recurrence.
- Experience implementing and maintaining production infrastructure through code using Terraform or OpenTofu.
- Ability to build useful automation and make safe changes in a production environment.
- Sound judgment in building and operating a secure AWS environment, balancing performance, reliability, and cost.
- Ability to translate engineering needs into workable solutions, manage implementation, and clearly explain decisions.
- Commitment to creating documentation that aids others in operating built systems.
Nice To Haves
- Experience supporting chip-design or other engineering workloads, particularly those involving large compute jobs, shared data, and software licenses.
- Experience building an AWS environment that integrates with local infrastructure, including secure remote access for engineers.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate an AWS platform that provides engineers with dependable access to compute and data.
- Make informed decisions regarding performance, security, cost, and the integration of cloud and local systems.
- Lead workload migrations from planning to production, understanding workload requirements, testing approaches, and managing transitions without disrupting engineering work.
- Investigate and resolve issues that impede or interrupt design work, identifying root causes across cloud, network, and storage boundaries and implementing lasting solutions.
- Automate provisioning and routine operations to ensure a repeatable environment, facilitate safe changes, and simplify platform maintenance.
- Collaborate with engineers to anticipate demand before major design milestones, ensuring capacity, data access, and software licensing can support planned runs, and communicating constraints early.
- Protect design data and ensure platform recoverability by establishing appropriate access, monitoring, and recovery practices, and taking responsibility for resolving production incidents.
- Measure the impact of changes on engineering turnaround time, reliability, and cost.
- Document decisions and operating procedures to facilitate support and extension of the platform by others.
