About The Position

The UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is seeking a Casual Sr. EMT to support STAT MedEvac. This role involves providing competent health and medical services in a prehospital setting, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for patients and employees. The Sr. EMT will work as part of a team to care for critically ill and injured patients, adhering to PA DOH BLS, ALS, and CCG guidelines. The position requires independent judgment to deliver appropriate care consistent with clinical protocols, even when direct medical command is not possible. The Sr. EMT must meet established education and experiential requirements and support the mission, goals, and objectives of the UPMC system.

Requirements

  • 1 year of EMT experience.
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system goals, and approved by your Manager.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job training.
  • Must work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment.
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) OR Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic OR Paramedic certification.
  • Automotive Insurance.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Driver's License.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator certification (can be obtained within 90 days of hire in North Central Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvania).
  • FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Certification IS-100 OR National Incident Management System Incident Command.
  • FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Certification IS-200 OR National Incident Management System Introduction Course.
  • FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Certification IS-700 OR National Incident Management System Single Resources.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting clearance.
  • Act 33 clearance.
  • Act 34 clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous ambulance and/or hospital experience preferred.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to any STAT MedEvac base site as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a clean patient environment and crew quarters.
  • Ensures safe operation of patient stretcher, including loading, unloading, and movement.
  • Maintains a positive attitude towards customers in high-stress environments.
  • Reports all injuries and completes appropriate documentation to a supervisor promptly.
  • Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements.
  • Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • Performs assigned duties, including daily, weekly, and monthly tasks assigned by the base site manager.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the transport vehicle and ensuring a safe environment for patients and healthcare workers.
  • Completes all official documentation in a timely manner (e.g., payroll, expense reports, orientation forms).
  • Ensures the safety of patients and others, reporting safety concerns and using available tools to enhance a safe work environment.
  • Performs daily equipment checks (vehicle, medications).
  • Selects and uses appropriate personal protective equipment based on anticipated hazards.
  • Maintains and ensures adequate vehicle operation (fuel, fluid levels, lights, sirens, radio, cellular phone) and works with the Regional Medical Manager to correct mechanical deficiencies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish rapport with customers and maintain positive relationships.
  • Ensures the crew is logged onto the computer duty roster.
  • Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Participates in shift reports from the off-going crew.
  • Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
  • Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities representing UPMC and STAT MedEvac.
  • Collaborates with PHRN and Paramedic to care for critically ill or injured patients according to established protocols and standards of care, assessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate.
  • Reports for work well-rested and fit for duty, adhering to the drug and alcohol policy.
  • Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary for patient care in any environment, utilizing available educational resources.
  • Adheres to the current uniform policy.
  • Actively participates in the development and training of new staff.
  • Performs equipment checks.
  • Adheres to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability.
