About The Position

The UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is looking to hire a Full-Time Sr. EMT. This role involves providing competent health and medical services in a prehospital setting, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for patients and employees. The Sr. EMT will work as part of a team to care for critically ill and injured patients, following PA DOH BLS, ALS and CCG guidelines. The position requires independent judgment to deliver appropriate care consistent with clinical protocols, even when medical command is not available. The Sr. EMT must fulfill established education and experiential requirements and perform other duties as assigned, while supporting the mission, goals, and objectives of the UPMC system.

Requirements

  • 1 year of EMT experience required.
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) required
  • 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system goals, and approved by your manager.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job training.
  • Must work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment.
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) OR Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic OR Paramedic
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Driver's License

Nice To Haves

  • Previous ambulance and/or hospital experience preferred.
  • Reliable transportation and be willing to travel to any STAT MedEvac base site as assigned.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) certification (can be obtained within 90 days of hire in North Central Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvania)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains clean patient environment as well as crew quarters
  • Ensures safe operation of patient laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all times. Maintains safe loading, unloading, adjustment of head of stretcher, and stretcher movement.
  • Reflects a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times, with a clear understanding of who the customer is.
  • Reports injuries and completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements, including maximum weight, hearing conservation program, and required medical screenings.
  • Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • Performs all assigned duties, including daily, weekly, monthly, or other duties assigned by the base site manager.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the transport vehicle and ensures a safe environment for patient and other healthcare workers in and around CEM vehicles.
  • Completes all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc.
  • Ensures the safety of patients and all others. Utilizes appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns, and uses tools available to enhance a safe work environment.
  • Performs daily equipment check (vehicle, medications)
  • Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated hazard.
  • Maintains and ensures adequate vehicle operation including proper fuel, fluid levels, lights, sirens, radio, cellular phone functioning. Works with Regional Medical Manager to ensure all mechanical deficiencies are corrected.
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation.
  • Ensures crew is logged onto computer duty roster
  • Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Participates in shift report from off going crew
  • Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
  • Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC and STAT MedEvac system.
  • Collaborates with PHRN and Paramedic to care for critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; assessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate.
  • Reports for work well rested and fit for duty. Adhering to the drug and alcohol policy at all times. including prescription and/or over the counter medicine use.
  • Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using educational resources that are required or made available.
  • Adheres to the current uniform policy.
  • Actively participates in the development and training of new staff.
