About The Position

This position is for a Sr. EHS Engineer specializing in Process Safety Management at 3M. The role involves collaborating with innovative 3Mers globally and making an impact by actively supporting EHS Cultural Excellence. The EHS Engineer will apply scientific, engineering principles, and behavioral-based systems to reduce EHS risks and ensure compliance. The role emphasizes primary ownership of plant EHS programs and training, particularly in Process Safety Management/Process Hazard Management, Machine Guarding/Machine Safety, and Confined Space Entry/Rescue. As part of the site EHS team, the engineer will also share ownership of other EHS programs like Fall Protection, LOTO, Ergonomics, Chemical Safety, Site Emergency Coordination, Ventilation, Hearing Conservation, and Respirators/PPE. The position requires investigating incidents, conducting root cause analyses, assessing high-hazard processes, completing compliance reports, analyzing EHS data, and providing EHS input for changes through the Management of Change process. The engineer will also participate in/lead EHS self-assessments/audits and act as a facility representative during agency inspections. Effective communication and the ability to convey EHS importance to non-EHS personnel are crucial, along with providing technical assistance and guidance to plant safety committees and supporting the design and installation of new or modified equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Five (5) years’ experience with EHS programs and procedures within a private, public, government or military environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher in a science, engineering, or environmental health and safety (EHS) discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience in implementation of comprehensive EHS management systems
  • Experience with hazard and risk assessments and experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with computer-based EHS tools for EHS data reporting and EHS assessments.
  • Experience with local, state and federal regulations including (e.g, Fire, OSHA, EPA, etc)
  • Self-directed, detail oriented, good interpersonal, communication, prioritization, and organizational skills
  • Analytical, leadership, project planning, program development and deployment skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with all employees within the plant
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience working in an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) role in a manufacturing environment addressing process safety management/process hazard management, machine guarding, and confined space issues.
  • Experience working on a cross-functional team
  • QEP, CSP, or CIH certification(s)

Responsibilities

  • Actively supporting EHS Cultural Excellence through personal responsibility for safety, health, and environment, promoting a culture to address incidents, near-misses and potential hazards.
  • Applying scientific, engineering principles and behavioral based systems to drive EHS risk reduction efforts and compliance activities.
  • Taking primary ownership of plant EHS programs & training as assigned but with initial emphasis on Process Safety Management/Process Hazard Management, Machine Guarding/Machine Safety, and Confined Space Entry/Rescue.
  • As part of the site EHS team, sharing ownership of plant EHS programs & training including but not limited to: Fall Protection, LOTO, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Confined Space Entry/Rescue, Chemical Safety, Site Emergency Coordination, Ventilation, Hearing Conservation, and Respirators/PPE.
  • Investigating workplace incidents and completing root cause analyses to determine appropriate corrective actions and conducting assessments of high hazard processes in order to reduce risk.
  • Completing internal and external EHS compliance reports and analyze EHS data and report trends and recommending plans for correction of gaps.
  • Provide EHS input to address changes (e.g., equipment, process, organizational) in the site’s business plan through the plant Management of Change process.
  • Participating and/or leading portions of EHS self-assessments and/or audits.
  • Acting as a facility representative during agency inspections, including but not limited to OSHA, fire department, and county.
  • Providing EHS knowledge and services on existing and new programs; communicating project or program status and results to management.
  • Communicating effectively in written and oral forms with peers and others at varying levels within the organization.
  • Presenting ideas well one on one, in small groups, and to larger audiences.
  • Having the ability to convey the meaning and importance of EHS topics to non-EHS personnel and to influence others to take appropriate action based on such information.
  • Actively seeking to continually improve communication and presentation skills.
  • Providing technical assistance and guidance to plant by leading or assisting in safety committee teams and meetings, including EHS regulatory interpretations.
  • Providing EHS support in the design and installation of new or modified equipment, industrial automation, and management of change processes.
