The Senior Director, Global Safety & Risk Programs is a strategic enterprise leader responsible for defining and executing Amgen's global safety and operational risk strategy. This role leads the transformation, governance, and continuous evolution of enterprise safety programs to enable sustainable business growth, operational excellence, innovation, and organizational resilience. Reporting to the Head of Global Environment, Health & Safety (EHS), this leader partners across Operations, Global Engineering, Research & Development, Product Stewardship, Corporate Functions, Security, and Digital Technology & Innovation to modernize safety management systems, accelerate digital transformation, and integrate risk management into business decision-making. This role will champion innovation, leverage emerging technologies and AI-enabled insights, strengthen enterprise capabilities, and build an integrated safety culture that enables Amgen to deliver with greater speed, agility, and confidence.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree and 5 years of leading transformation safety and risk experience OR Master’s degree and 9 years of leading transformation safety and risk experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 11 years of leading transformation safety and risk experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation of resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Amgen's enterprise Safety & Risk strategy aligned with corporate priorities and long-term business objectives.
  • Lead the transformation and modernization of global safety programs to improve organizational effectiveness and operational performance.
  • Establish a multi-year roadmap to evolve enterprise safety capabilities, governance, and risk management practices.
  • Benchmark leading biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and high-reliability organizations to continuously improve enterprise capabilities.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, agility, and continuous improvement across the global EHS organization.
  • Drive innovation by integrating AI, predictive analytics, automation, and digital technologies into enterprise safety programs.
  • Develop advanced dashboards and leading indicators that enable proactive risk management and executive decision-making.
  • Champion digital transformation initiatives that simplify processes, improve user experience, and increase organizational efficiency.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies to strengthen workforce protection and operational resilience.
  • Provide enterprise leadership and governance for: Occupational Safety, Critical Risk Management, Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) Prevention, Contractor Safety Excellence, Human & Organizational Performance (HOP), Control of Work, Electrical Safety, Machine Safety, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Working at Heights, Ergonomics, Powered Industrial Vehicles, Line-of-Fire Prevention, Learning Teams & Operational Learning.
  • Ensure programs remain scalable, standardized, and adaptable to evolving business needs.
  • Advance enterprise risk management capabilities through data-driven decision-making and systems thinking.
  • Establish governance for identifying, assessing, and mitigating operational risks across the enterprise.
  • Integrate risk management into capital projects, engineering design, manufacturing operations, R&D, and business planning.
  • Develop enterprise risk intelligence and predictive capabilities that improve organizational resilience.
  • Lead initiatives that simplify processes, eliminate unnecessary complexity, and improve execution across the enterprise.
  • Drive integration between safety, engineering, quality, operations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure safety programs enable productivity, innovation, and operational performance rather than acting as standalone compliance activities.
  • Promote systems thinking and cross-functional collaboration to improve end-to-end business performance.
  • Lead enterprise change management efforts that strengthen safety culture and organizational performance.
  • Build leadership capability in Human & Organizational Performance (HOP), learning culture, and risk-based decision-making.
  • Partner with senior leaders to embed safety into business transformation initiatives.
  • Foster psychological safety, frontline engagement, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Establish enterprise governance frameworks that ensure consistency, transparency, and accountability.
  • Monitor program effectiveness through KPIs, leading indicators, and executive dashboards.
  • Lead enterprise audits, assessments, and management reviews.
  • Ensure compliance while advancing innovative approaches that improve business value.
  • Build and develop a high-performing global organization capable of supporting future business needs.
  • Coach and mentor emerging leaders.
  • Develop critical technical capabilities and succession plans.
