Sr. Director, Data & Integrations Engineering

Cedar
$280,500 - $330,000Hybrid

About The Position

Cedar is at a meaningful inflection point, building a new enterprise data foundation to power the next generation of AI-driven products and client-facing analytics while simultaneously expanding its integration footprint to support new product lines and go-to-market motions. This role comes with challenges to navigate as these teams sit at the intersection of client delivery, platform evolution, and operational reliability. The opportunity is to build a well-oiled machine by establishing processes, relationships, and stakeholder alignment to reduce operational "thrash" over time. The Sr. Director will report directly to the CTO and lead an organization of approximately 35 engineers across three teams: Data Engineering, Integration Engineering, and Integration Support Engineering, through three experienced engineering managers. The role requires establishing processes, developing people, reducing organizational thrash, and ensuring operational quality.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in software engineering or technical implementation, with meaningful time in data-intensive, integration-heavy, or platform domains.
  • 8+ years in engineering leadership, including 4+ years managing managers, ideally with direct experience overseeing an org of 30+ engineers.
  • Solid technical grounding in integration systems and data.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity, with a demonstrated talent for reducing it.
  • Experience thriving in organizations where priorities shift, asks are imperfect, and the path forward requires synthesis rather than instruction.
  • Operational instincts: experience owning SLAs, on-call programs, incident management, or client-facing reliability commitments, and building systems and culture to sustain them.
  • Effective cross-functional stakeholder management, including executive presence.
  • Ability to translate between engineering realities and business priorities.
  • Comfortable navigating trade-off conversations with product, finance, and executive audiences.
  • Ability to represent teams' work, priorities, and risks clearly in front of C-suite leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare domain experience, particularly in revenue cycle management, EHR data models, or healthcare interoperability (HL7/FHIR).
  • AI-forward mindset, believing agentic developer tooling is a genuine force accelerator.
  • Experience setting expectations for adoption of AI tools.
  • Experience modeling AI-native workflows for managers and teams.
  • Experience creating space and expectation for engineers to integrate AI tools into their workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain processes, rituals, and accountability structures to ensure delivery predictability for platform work, client-facing implementations, and live production operations.
  • Grow an effective layer of engineering managers and help them build high-performing, engaged teams.
  • Own the reliability and SLA performance of Cedar's integration systems, reducing MTTI, MTTR, and systemic incident rates.
  • Build a culture where operational quality (observability, on-call discipline, postmortem rigor) is a first-class engineering value.
  • Partner with the Principal Data Architect to keep Cedar's data platform transition on track, including migration from legacy systems and adoption of new architecture.
  • Ensure downstream consumers (product engineering, data science, analytics, and AI/ML) have trusted, accessible data.
  • Reduce the time and cost of onboarding new clients and enabling new product lines by advancing integration frameworks and patterns.
  • Build structures (intake processes, prioritization frameworks, escalation paths) to protect teams from ad-hoc requests and shifting priorities.
  • Coach managers to run their teams with increasing autonomy, uphold roadmaps, and absorb pressure without needing escalation.
  • Build effective relationships with Product, Data Science, Commercial, and Delivery Engineering.
  • Represent teams' capacity and priorities clearly, negotiate trade-offs constructively, and keep issues surfaced and resolved before they become crises.
