About The Position
Senior Civil/Structural Designer (Drawing & Model Checker Focus) Location: Charlotte, North Carolina Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) Zachry Engineering Corporation’s Charlotte office offers the opportunity to work on high-impact infrastructure projects supported by long-standing utility and industrial clients. Zachry Engineering Corporation is seeking a Senior Civil/Structural Designer with strong expertise in drawing and model checking, QA/QC, and design verification to support complex industrial and infrastructure projects in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role combines advanced civil/structural design responsibilities with primary accountability as a designated drawing and model checker. The Senior Designer ensures that all 2D deliverables and 3D models—including civil, structural steel, concrete, and architectural elements—meet client requirements, company standards, and applicable codes prior to release. This position plays a critical role in maintaining quality, accuracy, and constructability across multiple concurrent projects while supporting team coordination and mentoring. In addition, as project needs arise, the Senior Designer will contribute directly to the development of models and drawings, supporting overall design production efforts.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Drafting, Design, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience
- 12+ years of civil/structural design experience, including formal checking or QA/QC roles
- Strong experience in QA/QC processes, drawing review, and 3D model validation
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, along with Autodesk or Bentley structural design platforms (AVEVA E3D or PDMS preferred)
- Proficiency with Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong understanding of structural design principles, construction practices, and multidisciplinary coordination
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and proactively identify and resolve design issues
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Prior experience serving as a designated drawing/model checker
- Advanced-level CADD expertise and deep QA/QC knowledge
- Experience working in multi-project, deadline-driven environments
- Familiarity with Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) methodologies
Responsibilities
- Serve as the designated checker for civil/structural drawings and 3D models—including civil, concrete, structural steel, and architectural deliverables—across multiple projects prior to issuance
- Ensure compliance with ACI, AISC, IBC, OSHA, client standards, and company SOPs
- Verify accuracy, constructability, completeness, and consistency of all deliverables
- Perform comprehensive 3D model reviews, including geometry, connectivity, clash detection, and interdisciplinary coordination
- Review vendor/shop drawings and construction submittmits for alignment with design intent and project requirements
- Identify, communicate, and help resolve discrepancies, clashes, and potential risks in collaboration with project teams
- Act as a QA/QC gatekeeper, ensuring all deliverables meet established standards prior to release
- Develop and review designs for civil systems (grading and drainage), structural steel, concrete, and architectural components in both 2D and 3D environments
- Mentor junior and mid-level team members, fostering technical development and best practices
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to meet project schedules and deliverables
- Support project execution through planning, prioritization, and effective field and design coordination
