About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Sr Database Engineer in San Jose, CA. This role involves executing strategic infrastructure transformation initiatives to establish industry-leading availability standards and architecting solutions for petabyte-scale operational excellence. The engineer will lead database platform initiatives for exceptional availability and petabyte-scale performance, architect cloud-native data solutions across multi-cloud environments, and design infrastructure-as-code frameworks for automated database operations. Additionally, the role includes establishing enterprise-grade security protocols and access controls, designing comprehensive monitoring and observability solutions for mission-critical systems, and executing advanced performance optimization for high-throughput environments. The engineer will also drive incident response leadership to maintain system reliability, provide technical consultation to product engineering teams on application resiliency design, and architect and code database tooling and automation frameworks using AI-powered solutions. Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, plus six years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, plus nine years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Six (6) years of experience managing large‑scale Oracle databases (10g–19c) in high‑availability environments, working with RAC, ASM, GoldenGate, and Data Guard, and handling installation, configuration, troubleshooting, failovers, switchovers, and upgrades across AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows.
  • Six (6) years of experience working with development teams to tune Oracle databases, optimizing SQL, designing smarter indexes, and applying partitioning strategies to cut query latency and boost application performance across critical systems.
  • Six (6) years of experience ensuring zero data loss in Oracle backups, restores, and disaster recovery, as well as applying quarterly PSU patches to keep databases secure, optimized, and compliant in high‑availability enterprise environments.
  • Six (6) years of experience implementing Oracle database security mechanisms, including TCPS configuration, Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), mutual TLS (mTLS), and Wallet setup to safeguard enterprise data and ensure compliance with security standards.
  • Four (4) years of experience as a specialist in Oracle Cloud and Exadata, delivering secure, high‑performance migrations, automation, and management for continuous availability and full compliance.
  • Three (3) years of experience managing MySQL databases—including installation, configuration, tuning, and troubleshooting—with hands‑on experience in MySQL 5 and 8, ensuring reliability and peak performance.
  • Three (3) years of experience managing MSSQL databases with Always On, Failover Clustering, and Log Shipping, ensuring critical systems stay reliable and always available.
  • Two (2) years of experience with shell scripting, Python, and Oracle APEX, developing automation scripts, building custom applications, and creating dashboards to monitor database health and streamline processes.
  • Led cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑availability, high‑performance Oracle database solutions, optimizing performance, ensuring reliability, and scaling to meet business growth.
