About the position
The job overview for this role is to be responsible for the administration, scaling, and maintenance of Nylas' large sharded MySQL database environment. This includes ensuring the clusters are healthy, scaling, performant, and cost-effective, as well as enforcing security and auditing practices. The role also involves facilitating the migration to newer database technologies and improving automation and alerting systems. Strong proficiency in MySQL database management, including performance tuning and setting up monitoring dashboards, is required.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, scale, and administer large sharded MySQL database environment
- Facilitate migration to newer database technologies
- Ensure clusters are healthy, scaling, performant, and cost-effective
- Enforce security and auditing practices to maintain DB integrity
- Teach and encourage smart database practices
- Improve automation of various database systems
- Improve automated backup and restore systems
- Improve alerting system
- Experiment and recommend new database engine upgrades and data stores
- Document current DB processes/architecture
Requirements
- Strong proficiency in MySQL database management
- Performance tuning and query optimization
- Index tuning
- Maintaining high availability solutions using mha and orchestrator
- Setting up monitoring dashboards with meaningful metrics
- Experience with large sharded MySQL database environments
- Knowledge of newer database technologies and migration processes
- Enforcing security and auditing practices for database integrity
- Familiarity with automation and self-service practices for database systems
- Experience with backup and restore systems
- Improving alerting systems for actionable alerts
- Ability to experiment and recommend new database engine upgrades and data stores
- Documentation skills for current database processes and architecture
