About The Position

Hartford Fire Insurance Company in Charlotte, NC has the following opening for a Sr. Data Engineer. This role involves designing and developing high-quality, scalable software modules for a next-generation analytics solution suite. The engineer will prototype high-impact innovations, catering to changing business needs, by leveraging new technologies, specifically AWS (Cloud and Big Data). The position requires functional knowledge and skills reflective of a competent practitioner capable of delivering work of the highest technical complexity. The role includes consulting with functional management on short and long-range business requirements, recommending innovations, and working closely with client management to identify and specify complex business requirements and processes across diverse development platforms and computing environments. The Sr. Data Engineer will provide highly technical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies to assist business units in meeting strategic objectives. Responsibilities also include reviewing disaster recovery plans, coordinating activities with cross-functional IT unit stakeholders, researching and evaluating alternative solutions, and formulating logical statements of business problems to devise, test, and implement efficient application program solutions. The role involves analyzing existing system and programming logic for efficiency improvements, acting as the primary technical point of contact for interaction with other cross-functional units, assigning personnel to projects, and directing their activities. Additionally, the engineer will review, evaluate, and prepare periodic activity and progress reports for the team.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field
  • 3 years of experience in a related occupation
  • 3 years of experience in Data analysis, manipulation, and development
  • 3 years of experience in Big Data technologies and concepts on a Hadoop platform (e.g. Scoop, Hive, Pig, NoSQL)
  • 3 years of experience in SQL
  • 3 years of experience in Data wrangling technologies
  • 3 years of experience in ETL, Data Integration, Big Data, Cloud (AWS) Technologies
  • 3 years of experience in Oracle, Talend, Unix/Linux Shell Scripting, Autosys Scheduling Tool, Sub Version, Version Control Tools
  • 3 years of experience in Data warehouse applications in financial/insurance domain
  • 3 years of experience in Programming in Java

Responsibilities

  • Consult with functional management in the analysis of short and long-range business requirements and recommends innovations which anticipate the future impact of changing business needs.
  • Work closely with client management to identify and specify the complex business requirements and processes for diverse development platforms, computing environments (e.g., Cloud, host based, distributed systems, client server), software, hardware, technologies and tools.
  • Provide highly technical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies that assist the functional business units in meeting their strategic objectives.
  • Review the disaster recovery plan to ensure that new systems promote uninterrupted systems operation.
  • Coordinate activities with cross-functional IT unit stakeholders (e.g., database, operations, telecommunications, technical support, etc.).
  • Research and evaluate alternative solutions and recommends the most efficient and cost effective solution for the systems design.
  • Formulate logical statements of business problems and devises, tests and implements efficient, cost effective application program solutions (e.g., codes and/or reuses existing code through the use of program development software alternatives and/or integrates purchased solutions).
  • Prepare charts, tables and diagrams to assist in analyzing problems, utilizing various business, scientific, engineering and mathematical techniques.
  • Analyze existing system and programming logic to provide more efficient machine operations or to identify difficulties, and revises the logic and procedures involved as necessary.
  • Primary technical point of contact for interaction with other cross-functional units and teams.
  • Assign personnel to the various projects or application components and direct their activities.
  • Review, evaluate, and prepare periodic activity and progress reports for the team.
