About The Position

The Sr. Data Engineer works in Abbott’s Cancer Diagnostics division in Madison, Wisconsin, on the Enterprise Data Customer Experience (EDCX) team. The role designs, builds, and optimizes data pipelines and models that form the data foundation for patient and provider experiences across Abbott’s cancer diagnostics portfolio. This includes the Customer Data Platform (CDP), which supports personalized communications through Braze.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or Engineering; alternatively, a high school diploma or GED and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
• Experience with Spark on Databricks or Snowflake; Python and SQL development; ETL data pipelines; and data modeling using relational, dimensional, and/or NoSQL databases.
• Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

• 5 years of experience in data engineering, building enterprise data pipelines.
• Proficiency in Databricks and Delta Lake, big data file formats such as Parquet and Avro, AWS services including S3 and SQS, GitLab, REST API development, Tableau, and Jira/Confluence.
• Familiarity with customer data platforms and marketing communication tools such as Braze.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and test scalable ETL data pipelines and data models in Databricks using Spark, Python, and SQL to feed the Customer Data Platform and support customer journey orchestration.
• Lead design reviews, evaluate alternatives, and make technical decisions that shape the team’s delivery approach and data architecture.
• Troubleshoot and resolve data and pipeline issues, taking ownership of data quality, performance, security, and reliability with minimal oversight.
• Partner with CX product managers, business stakeholders, and engineers to translate requirements into well-documented data solutions, with clear plans and status updates.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers while promoting engineering best practices and Agile delivery using Jira and Confluence.
