Sr. Data Engineer

Sedgwick•Telecommuter TX, NV
•$110,956 - $199,720

About The Position

The Sr. Data Engineer designs, builds, and maintains scalable data pipelines across on-premises and cloud sources, including batch, real-time streaming, and event-driven data movement. The role serves as a core developer for Sedgwick’s Snowflake platform, supporting performance, data modeling, storage structures, and secure data sharing. It also builds transformation pipelines that deliver high-quality data to Snowflake and dbt AI features, and develops semantic layers and metadata models for Self-Service 2.0 natural-language interfaces. The position establishes reference architectures, reusable templates, and CI/CD practices so decentralized business teams can build data products safely and consistently. It drives adoption of dbt and evaluates AWS and Azure data tools to optimize data flows. The role directly manages and mentors one data engineer, with potential for team growth, and coaches decentralized data analysts in developing engineering practices. Other duties may be assigned, the role supports organizational quality programs, and travel is required as needed.

Requirements

  • At least five years of dedicated data engineering experience, including a proven record of building production-grade data pipelines.
  • Advanced hands-on experience with Snowflake architecture, performance tuning, and data sharing.
  • Experience moving data across hybrid environments, including on-premises to cloud, using batch, streaming, and event-driven patterns.
  • Advanced knowledge of Snowflake data modeling, storage structures, and secure data sharing.
  • Strong knowledge of scalable batch, real-time streaming, and event-driven data pipeline architecture.
  • Experience with semantic layers, including dbt Semantic Layer and Snowflake Cortex or semantic definitions.
  • Strong Python skills, particularly in cloud environments and Azure Functions used for data workloads.
  • Strong SQL capabilities.
  • Knowledge of reference architecture, reusable pipeline patterns, templates, and CI/CD practices.
  • Collaborative coaching and leadership skills, including the ability to teach, establish governance, and strengthen engineering practices across cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet or exceed performance competencies.
  • Ability to meet the role’s mental and physical demands, including handling multiple priorities and deadlines, keyboarding, and travel as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, data engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university; equivalent combinations of education, professional certifications, and relevant work experience will be considered.
  • Experience building or maintaining semantic layers and structuring data for downstream AI, large language model, or natural-language search capabilities.
  • Experience with dbt.
  • Experience with Azure data tools, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, and Stream Analytics.
  • Familiarity with AWS data ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable batch, real-time streaming, and event-driven data pipelines that move data from on-premises and cloud sources.
  • Develop for the Snowflake data platform and support its performance, data modeling, and storage structures.
  • Architect and build transformation pipelines that deliver high-quality data inputs to Snowflake and dbt AI features.
  • Design and maintain semantic layers and metadata models for Self-Service 2.0 natural-language user interfaces.
  • Establish reference architectures, reusable templates, and CI/CD best practices for decentralized teams building data products.
  • Directly manage and provide career mentorship to one data engineer, with potential for team growth.
  • Guide decentralized data analysts in maturing their engineering practices.
  • Drive adoption of dbt for data transformation and evaluate AWS and Azure data tools to optimize data flow.
  • Support organizational quality programs.
  • Travel as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
