Sr Controls Engineer

Vertiv•Pelzer, SC

About The Position

Vertiv is seeking a highly capable engineer with a background in Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, Process Design, or Mechanical Design to support its Integrated Solutions business unit in custom, engineer-to-order (ETO) production environments. The role bridges product design and manufacturing execution, focusing on optimized material flow, process design, visual management, and advanced manufacturing integration. It calls for a systems-thinking approach to developing scalable, efficient, and repeatable production processes for highly customized products, supporting operational excellence through lean manufacturing, digital and visual factory design, and the deployment of new manufacturing technologies. The engineer designs and optimizes manufacturing processes, production models, layouts, workstations, and assembly methods; develops material presentation and kitting systems; leads lean and continuous improvement initiatives; and evaluates and integrates manufacturing technologies, automation, and digital tools. The role also supports engineering-to-manufacturing integration, collaborates on manufacturability and new product introductions, defines process controls and quality checks, and develops standardized work instructions and documentation. The position requires regular movement around the manufacturing floor and may involve lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. Travel is listed as less than 5%. The successful candidate is expected to embrace Vertiv’s principles, priorities, and behaviors. Vertiv is headquartered in Westerville, Ohio, employs around 34,000 people, and operates in more than 130 countries. Work authorization in the United States is required; sponsorship is not provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, process design, or production engineering; experience in ETO or high-mix environments is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing process design, material flow, and factory layout.
  • Experience with CAD tools, ERP/MRP systems, and engineering-to-manufacturing integration.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and their application.

Nice To Haves

  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Proven leadership and project management abilities, including experience leading cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize end-to-end manufacturing processes for custom ETO products, including layouts, work sequencing, and material flow.
  • Develop scalable production models for low-to-medium-volume, high-mix environments, balancing flexibility and efficiency.
  • Drive line design, workstation definition, and assembly methodologies aligned with engineering intent.
  • Establish material presentation, kitting strategies, and point-of-use delivery systems.
  • Implement visual management systems, including production control boards, standard work, and factory-wide visual standards.
  • Partner with supply chain and operations to align material availability with production flow.
  • Lead lean initiatives, including 5S, standard work, value stream mapping, and waste elimination, tailored to ETO complexity.
  • Identify and execute improvements to throughput, lead time, and productivity, using data-driven methods to sustain continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate, design, and deploy manufacturing technologies, including automation, digital tools, and smart factory systems.
  • Support integration of CAD, BOMs, and routings into manufacturing execution systems.
  • Improve quality and ergonomics through innovation in tooling, fixtures, and assembly aids.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to ensure manufacturability (DFM/DFA) of custom solutions.
  • Serve as a technical interface among engineering, operations, and supply chain teams.
  • Support new product introductions and configuration-driven production setups.
  • Define process controls and quality checks aligned with product and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop standardized work instructions and documentation for repeatable execution.
