About The Position

Corning is seeking a Senior Electrical Controls Engineer to provide electrical-discipline support for the construction, installation, debugging, and startup of equipment and automated systems. The role includes hands-on work through equipment turnover to operations at domestic and international manufacturing sites. Most time will be spent on the manufacturing floor working with equipment, while supervising and directing internal or contract engineering technicians, maintenance personnel, and outside trades during equipment installation and conversion activities, including demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debugging. The engineer will help deliver safe, high-quality projects on schedule and within budget, develop an understanding of area processes and equipment, improve installation practices, and coordinate with external system integrators and machine builders. The role requires understanding machine controls, including analog and digital I/O, control-sequence logic, fail-safe states, and recovery sequences. Travel to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable manufacturing sites in North Carolina and potentially internationally is required; travel may be full-time during project deployment.

  • Knowledge of power systems at 480 VAC and below.
  • Ability to work hands-on with equipment using typical hand tools, instruments, and measurement or alignment devices.
  • Ability to translate engineering solutions into requirements and then into process or equipment designs that deliver required performance criteria.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics to support troubleshooting.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple work streams in a team environment and adjust to changing priorities, with a strong focus on job-site safety.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong communication, presentation, and project-management capabilities.
  • PLC code-development experience to achieve desired operation and throughput of new and existing production equipment.
  • SCADA/HMI development experience, knowledge of PID control theory, and electromechanical technical understanding.
  • Experience in optical fiber manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without compromising safety, intellectual property, or quality, and follow corporate, business-unit, and site guidelines.
  • Ensure project-team members receive safety training, safety is addressed in job plans, and safety requirements are met; identify potential safety issues and report and investigate safety incidents.
  • Develop an understanding of processes and equipment functions within the area of responsibility.
  • Analyze and correct equipment installation practices to improve efficiency, particularly installation schedules.
  • Coordinate with external system integrators and machine builders to deliver integrated process-equipment systems to plants on time, within budget, and to performance requirements.
  • Understand the use and setup of machine controls, including system analog and digital I/O requirements, control-sequence logic, fail-safe states, and recovery sequences.
