About The Position

Join Nationwide’s Emerging Technology Development Lab, a small, high-impact team exploring the technologies that will shape the next three to five years. As a Sr. Consultant, Software Engineering, you will turn emerging ideas into tangible prototypes, assess enterprise readiness, and help guide where Nationwide invests, experiments, and scales. You will work hands-on across areas such as agentic and multimodal AI, digital twins, post-quantum cryptography, quantum computing, spatial and edge intelligence, adaptive experiences, and other next-generation platforms. Partnering with engineers, architects, designers, researchers, and offshore teams, you will rapidly test hypotheses, build end-to-end proof points, and translate complex findings into clear recommendations for technical and business leaders. This role is ideal for a curious, versatile engineer who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building what has not been built before, and can connect emerging technology possibilities to meaningful enterprise outcomes. Bring strong software engineering and prototyping experience, a passion for learning, and the ability to influence through insight, credibility, and execution. As a Software Engineer you will focus on mentoring and leading others to deliver high quality, cost-effective technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
  • Eight or more years of analysis and technology experience.
  • Hands on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript.
  • Extensive knowledge of software development lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to tackle sophisticated business and development problems.
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Mentors and trains others on design techniques, tools and coding standards.
  • Executes and provides strategic advice on using technology to achieve goals.
  • Drives cross-collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams.
  • Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.
  • Champions the use of DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.
  • Drives continuous learning and improvement through ongoing training, practice and innovation.
  • Works across organizations and product areas to drive joint technical roadmaps.
  • Manages individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
