Sr. Commodity Engineer- Raw Materials

Blue Origin•Huntsville, WA

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a technically grounded Senior Commodity Engineer for Raw Materials to develop and execute the end-to-end engineering supply chain strategy for critical raw materials, including aluminum plate and tube stock, copper, titanium, steel, and other metallic commodities. The role will standardize raw materials, establish a robust and cost-competitive supply chain, reduce material variability and scrap, and ensure availability to support manufacturing production rates. This high-impact, cross-functional position operates at the intersection of engineering and supply chain. The engineer will understand product design drivers and total cost of ownership, and define standard material sizing, material qualification, and supplier selection in partnership with materials and process engineering, material planning, procurement, commodity management, production, and program engineering teams. The role will also identify data-system and tooling gaps and partner with Enterprise Technology teams to address them. The position supports Blue Origin’s production ambitions and commitment to safe, repeatable human spaceflight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in materials engineering, commodity management, strategic sourcing, or supply chain in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-consequence manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with metallic raw materials, including aluminum plate, tube, or extrusions; copper; titanium; or steel.
  • Working knowledge of material specifications and standards such as AMS, ASTM, and MIL-SPEC, including associated forms, alloys, and heat-treat designations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders at all levels.
  • Passion for Blue Origin’s mission and vision.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality management systems and aerospace supplier qualification processes.
  • Experience performing engineering design and qualification of components or products for use in a safety-critical industry.
  • Experience driving design-to-commodity or DFMA initiatives in collaboration with product engineering.
  • Knowledge of commodity market dynamics, metal indices, and hedging strategies.
  • MBA or advanced degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, or Business.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design standardization across aluminum plate, aluminum tube, copper, and other raw material commodities to consolidate part numbers, alloys, tempers, and treatments into defined standard sizes and specifications.
  • Partner with design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and materials and processes teams to drive adoption of a standard material catalog across programs and product lines.
  • Develop and maintain a master raw material catalog defining approved alloys, dimensions, surface treatments, and heat-treat conditions.
  • Influence design-for-supply-chain decisions early in product development to prevent future material fragmentation.
  • Partner with commodity management to develop and execute a multi-year raw material commodity strategy aligned with production-rate ramp, cost-reduction targets, and supply-security objectives.
  • Work with commodity management on long-term agreements, blanket purchase orders, and consignment or vendor-managed inventory arrangements to reduce unit cost and improve material availability.
  • Collaborate with finance and operations to develop should-cost models and benchmark supplier pricing against market indices.
  • Identify inventory and stocking shortcomings, including safety stock, kanbans, and vendor-managed inventory, and develop and execute strategies with stakeholders to reduce shortages and support production-rate increases.
  • Partner with supply chain and operations personnel to establish standard operating processes for raw material forecasting, procurement, stocking, and consumption.
  • Track and report commodity cost savings, supplier performance metrics, and supply-chain risk indicators to leadership.
  • Work with Supplier Quality Engineering to define incoming inspection requirements, certifications such as AMS and ASTM, and first-article requirements for raw material suppliers.
