Sr. Commissioning Manager (Power Plant)

SpaceX•Starbase, TX, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

SpaceX is building and operating large-scale power generation for launch and compute. The Sr. Commissioning Manager leads commissioning of power plants, including gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), balance of plant, electrical systems, and controls, from mechanical completion through reliable operation. The role is field-based during startup, including time in the control room and hands-on troubleshooting in the field. The manager plans and executes commissioning, oversees schedules, budgets, and staffing, leads commissioning and OEM field teams, and ensures systems are ready for operation. The role includes startup and testing, safety and energization authority, deficiency closeout, and transition of a plant to operations so it starts, trips, and recovers as designed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of field experience commissioning utility-scale power plants, including gas turbines.
  • Experience leading commissioning on a utility-scale or multi-unit plant, not only single-skid support.
  • Experience writing or owning startup procedures.
  • Must be available to work on site during startups, including nights and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel between generation sites.
  • Ability to work around energized equipment and live construction.
  • Ability to work 10–12 hour shifts outdoors in heat and high noise during startup.
  • Must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain required authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 10 years of field experience commissioning utility-scale power plants, including gas turbines.
  • Experience as an OEM commissioning lead with GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Power, Solar Turbines, Baker Hughes, or equivalent.
  • Direct startup experience with H- or F-class and/or aeroderivative gas turbines, such as LM2500 or LM6000 class or equivalent.
  • Experience with DCS/turbine control platforms such as Mark VIe, SPPA-T3000, or equivalent.
  • Experience with Mitsubishi DIASYS Netmation or Emerson Ovation DCS.
  • Experience with HRSG and steam turbine integration and performance testing.
  • Familiarity with ASME PTC 22 or PTC 46 performance test codes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and execute the commissioning plan, including system turnover, pre-commissioning, first fire, synchronization, performance testing, and reliability runs.
  • Own the commissioning schedule, budget, and staffing plan.
  • Lead the commissioning team and OEM field crews.
  • Accept systems from construction only when accompanied by a complete mechanical completion package.
  • Start up aeroderivative and simple-cycle units; when an HRSG is in scope, conduct chemical cleaning and steam or air blows before the steam turbine takes steam.
  • Own procedures, punchlists, deficiency tracking, and decisions about system readiness.
  • Close punch items by category, including commercial deficiencies, before commercial operation.
  • Own LOTO, permit-to-work, and energization authority from first backfeed through commercial operation.
  • Commission controls and protection in coordination with electrical and automation teams.
  • Conduct guarantee and performance tests against the contract and oversee the reliability run through commercial operation.
  • Hand over a plant to operations that starts, trips, and recovers as designed.
