About The Position

The Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager is responsible for the ongoing administration, monitoring, and risk oversight of a complex commercial loan portfolio following loan closing. This role independently manages portfolio administration activities, including annual reviews, financial analysis, covenant compliance, risk rating recommendations, and proactive identification of emerging credit risk. Working closely with Commercial Loan Officers, Credit Administration, and other internal business partners, the Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager applies advanced commercial lending knowledge to support sound credit decisions, preserve strong member relationships, and protect the safety and soundness of the commercial loan portfolio. This role works independently with limited supervision, serves as a subject matter resource within the commercial team, coaches less experienced team members, and contributes to process improvements that enhance portfolio quality and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Typically six (6) or more years of progressive experience in commercial credit analysis, commercial underwriting, portfolio management, commercial banking, or a related field.
  • Experience analyzing Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) lending relationships.
  • Experience managing commercial loan portfolios and supporting ongoing credit administration.
  • Working knowledge of commercial loan documentation, covenant administration, and portfolio monitoring.
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial credit analysis and portfolio risk management.
  • Strong understanding of commercial real estate lending, commercial and industrial lending, financial statement analysis, cash flow analysis, and collateral evaluation.
  • Ability to independently manage a large commercial portfolio while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines and exercising sound judgment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to identify emerging credit concerns and recommend appropriate risk management strategies.
  • Sound credit judgement with the ability to independently evaluate borrower performance and recommend appropriate risk ratings.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex credit matters clearly to business partners.
  • Ability to build productive working relationships across the Commercial Lending department and collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and external members.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and review the work of less experienced professionals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, financial spreading software, and commercial loan systems.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and identifying opportunities to enhance portfolio administration processes.

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage an assigned portfolio of commercial loan relationships following loan closing, serving as the primary owner of ongoing portfolio administration.
  • Complete annual relationship reviews accurately and thoroughly within established policy requirements and timelines.
  • Collect, review, spread, and analyze borrower and guarantor financial statements, tax returns, rent rolls, operating statements, and other required financial information.
  • Monitor financial covenant compliance, collateral documentation, reporting requirements, and other loan agreement provisions.
  • Evaluate borrower performance and recommend appropriate internal risk ratings or other credit actions based on financial analysis and emerging credit trends.
  • Identify adverse trends, deteriorating financial performance, collateral concerns, industry trends, or other potential credit risks and communicate recommendations to Commercial Loan Officers and Credit Administration.
  • Perform ongoing financial analysis to evaluate repayment capacity, cash flow performance, guarantor strength, collateral adequacy, and overall credit quality.
  • Prepare underwriting for Watch List relationships, workout scenarios, portfolio modifications, and other assigned portfolio transactions.
  • Monitor portfolio concentrations, reporting exceptions, loan maturities, covenant compliance trends, and other portfolio metrics to support effective portfolio risk management.
  • Maintain complete and accurate credit files that support internal audits, external loan reviews, and regulatory examinations.
  • Build collaborative working relationships with Commercial Loan Officers, Credit Administration, Loan Operations, and other business partners to support effective portfolio management.
  • Coach and provide guidance to less experienced team members to promote consistency and quality within the department.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives, technology implementations, and process improvement efforts that improve operational efficiency and portfolio quality.
  • Maintain current knowledge of commercial lending regulations, accounting principles, industry trends, and economic conditions affecting commercial lending.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
