About The Position

Be part of an exciting time at UPMC Children’s—join us in our beautiful new building as we grow our cardiac program and build something special together! Scope will include Pre-Op and Post-Op recovery as well as additional sedated procedures as assigned. This role offers a unique opportunity to help build a Unit from the ground up and play a key leadership role in advancing high-quality, family centered care for children with complex cardiac needs. UPMC offers a robust Nursing Career ladder - Title and Rate of Pay will be based on Education & Experience The Sr. Clinician is an expert nurse who serves as a role model and leader in clinical practice, education, and evidence‑based practice. They guide the unit through complex EBP and process‑improvement initiatives, support management in fostering a culture of excellence, and assist with hiring, evaluations, and performance management. The Sr. Clinician holds shift‑level authority for nursing care delivery and uses advanced clinical knowledge to improve patient outcomes and the work environment. They provide staff education, orientation, consultation, and coordination of clinical activities. This role requires the ability to deliver age‑appropriate care, interpret patient data, and address individual patient needs. The Sr. Clinician demonstrates commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.

Requirements

  • 3 years of nursing experience
  • 1 year of related leadership experience required
  • BS/BSN required
  • Master's degree in Nursing required if BS degree not in nursing or Master's degree in a related field if BSN is held
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 / 34 / 73 with renewal
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.

Responsibilities

  • Supports staff during transitions by addressing psychological and learning needs; practices participatory leadership and contributes to shared governance at the unit, facility, or system level.
  • Assumes leadership responsibilities in areas such as quality improvement, evidence‑based practice, and onboarding of graduate nurses or new hires.
  • Assists Unit/Department leadership with the peer‑review process.
  • Builds strong internal and external working relationships through mentoring, team building, and positive communication.
  • Coaches staff on cultural diversity, addresses workplace conflict and impairment, and models accountability for safe work hours, time management, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Promotes professional growth by mentoring, educating, and sharing knowledge with colleagues and the healthcare team.
  • Serves as a preceptor for students, interns, graduate nurses, and experienced nurses; supports the development of new preceptors.
  • Encourages continuous learning and shares expertise across and beyond the clinical unit.
  • Utilizes performance‑improvement tools to enhance care quality and work‑environment outcomes.
  • Integrates research and best practices into daily work and disseminates improvements across units or the broader system.
  • Applies Relationship‑Based Care and the nursing process to meet clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and families.
  • Communicates effectively to advocate for patient care and unit practice changes; ensures comprehensive documentation that supports care coordination.
  • Demonstrates strong critical‑thinking skills in addressing clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual patient needs.
  • Aligns practice with organizational and professional goals to improve patient safety, quality, and overall experience.
  • Creates a compassionate, patient‑centered environment through healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
