About The Position
AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, including data centers and their supporting systems. This role is part of a diverse team of engineers and specialists focused on keeping the cloud running efficiently and reliably. The Data Center Sr. Civil Engineer will lead Civil Engineering designs for Amazon Data Centers, contributing to innovative site development, providing technical guidance, and solving complex implementation issues. The position is within the Americas Design Engineering team, focusing on data center facilities across North and South America. Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
- 10+ years of progressive site civil engineering experience focused on large-scale industrial, commercial, and mission-critical developments.
- Licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) registration is required.
- Demonstrated expertise in the design and construction of large-scale industrial utility and distribution systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, industrial water and wastewater, stormwater management, medium voltage duct banks, fiber optic networks, and construction phase services including problem solving, RFI, Submittals, etc.
- Expert-level proficiency in mass grading, drainage design, and earthwork balancing.
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, retaining wall design and environmental compliance.
- Significant experience managing site entitlement processes, permitting, and coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Proven ability to research and implement innovative design and construction methods to reduce project costs and accelerate schedules.

Responsibilities
- Manage external civil design consultants through the Data Center design and construction process.
- Review designs for site layout, mass grading, grading and drainage, power substations, dry and wet utilities, and pavement.
- Lead permitting, development, and civil design and construction coordination of multiple fast-paced data center campuses simultaneously on a regional level.
- Assist, coach, and mentor lower-level engineers.
- Coordinate with internal and external architects, structural, and MEP engineers, physical and technical security, environmental and geotechnical engineers, acting as a technical resource and civil engineering design leader.
- Own and develop cost and time-efficient data center site layout, incorporating grading, utilities, and road patterns while maintaining flexibility for design evolution.
- Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners.
- Develop and maintain design standards, template drawings, and specifications related to site civil design for Data Centers and supporting infrastructure.
- Create, review, and release design RFPs for various projects, including DCs and special program facilities.
- Foresee and manage Technical Program Manager’s expectations regarding project-specific cost and schedules variables.
- Develop and lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency.
- Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with authorities having jurisdiction (15 to 25%).
