About The Position

Collins Aerospace is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Safety Engineer to join our Reliability, Maintainability, and System Safety team. In this role, you’ll help ensure that the avionics systems serving our Air Transport customers are not only cutting-edge, but safe, reliable, and ready for the challenges of modern aviation. This is a role for someone who thrives at the intersection of technical rigor, cross-functional collaboration, and mission-driven engineering. You’ll influence system-level design decisions, guide programs through critical safety milestones, and help build products that pilots, passengers, and operators trust every day. This role will be worked hybrid in Cedar Rapids, IA; Burnsville, MN; or Bothell; WA. Relocation assistance is available.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
  • Experience in aircraft systems, hardware, or software engineering
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CAFTA or similar Fault Tree analysis tools
  • Working knowledge of ARP4761
  • Basic knowledge of ARP4754A, DO-254, DO-178B/C, DO-297
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical information to peers, to all levels of internal management, and to external customers
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and presenting to peers, leadership, and customers
  • Experience coordinating projects and complex engineering activities
  • Basic knowledge
  • Experience in reliability engineering theory

Responsibilities

  • Perform civil safety assessment process in accordance with ARP4761. Including (but not limited to): Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSAs), System Safety Assessments (SSAs), Fault Tree Analysis (FTAs), Common Mode Analyses (CMAs)
  • Support systems, hardware, and software engineering teams in defining system safety requirements during development activity
  • Review of design and development documentation for safety critical equipment
  • Review analysis of peer safety engineers
  • Mentor and train less experienced safety engineers
  • Accountable to team members and organizational leadership for committed work and responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas (program, function, process, technology, etc)
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and organizational leaders to develop plans
  • Be a recognized technical expert in avionics safety
