About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Sr Associate Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of filament-wound composite cases for solid propulsion and controllable solids systems. The role contributes to component- and system-level design activities involving carbon fiber epoxy materials, pressure vessel design, and filament winding processes. It requires practical knowledge of Classical Lamination Theory and composite manufacturing methods, and the ability to work under moderate supervision to execute design tasks and meet technical objectives. The selected candidate will support engineering activities across design, analysis, production, and qualification testing for composite case hardware. The position is located on-site in Huntsville, Alabama, and follows a 9/80 schedule: employees work 9 out of every 14 days, totaling 80 hours, and have every other Friday off. The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of mechanical engineering or related experience; or a graduate degree and 0–2 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, 6 years of mechanical engineering or related experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.
  • Practical knowledge of Classical Lamination Theory and composite manufacturing methods.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Practical knowledge of composite materials and propulsion system design.
  • Knowledge of solid propulsion system design and manufacturing methods.
  • Experience with strategic booster motors, tactical rocket motors, or controllable solids systems.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as CREO, PLM systems such as Windchill, engineering drawings, and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Support mechanical design efforts for filament-wound composite cases, propulsion systems, and related components.
  • Develop design concepts, 3D models, and detailed manufacturing engineering drawings.
  • Perform trade studies and prepare component specifications, procedures, and supporting documentation.
  • Collaborate with analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, and customer support teams to ensure design feasibility and producibility.
  • Plan and execute design assignments within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.
  • Support production activities at shop-floor and supplier locations, including evaluation of nonconforming hardware and participation in process reviews.
  • Support engineering drawing and specification updates through configuration control processes.
  • Participate in environmental and qualification testing, including pathfinder, subscale, component, and system-level tests.
  • Prepare and present technical presentations and engineering reports for internal and external stakeholders.
