Sr. AI Engineer

Farmer's Business Network•Remote - United States,
•$220,000 - $245,000

About The Position

Farmers Business Network (FBN) is hiring a Sr. AI Engineer to own the design, development, evaluation, launch, and operation of member-facing AI agents for customer support, lending, and sales. The agents should provide farmers with fast, accurate answers and order assistance at any hour, while allowing employees to focus on work that requires human judgment. The role includes evolving the customer experience agent from an internal staff copilot to a member-facing system; automating lending operations; building sales and ordering agents; and establishing evaluation, safety, monitoring, and incident-response practices. The engineer owns agent architecture, tool and data access, evaluation criteria, and launch readiness, while business owners approve what agents may say and do. The work has company-wide impact and supports FBN’s FY27 AI plan for Direct, CX, and Lending. The role also sets practices for building and evaluating customer-facing agents and mentors other engineers and business champions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field and at least 8 years of software engineering experience, or at least 12 years of related experience.
  • Experience shipping LLM-based agents or assistants to real users in production, including tool use, retrieval, and multi-step workflows.
  • Experience building evaluation suites and using them to make launch decisions, including offline test sets based on real data, online monitoring, and regression checks.
  • Strong backend engineering skills in Python or TypeScript, including APIs, queues, data pipelines, and AWS cloud services.
  • Experience integrating business systems such as CRM, ERP, telephony, or messaging platforms, with attention to authentication, permissions, and audit trails.
  • Sound judgment about agent safety, including when an agent should act, draft a response, or hand off to a person.
  • Ability to work directly with non-technical business owners and translate unclear customer problems into scoped agents with success criteria.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in customer support automation, contact centers, or conversational AI.
  • Experience with lending, fintech, or regulated workflows, including document processing, KYC, or credit policy.
  • Experience with Salesforce, nCino, NetSuite, or Dialpad APIs.
  • SQL experience with a data warehouse such as Redshift.
  • Background in agriculture, marketplaces, or e-commerce.

Responsibilities

  • Develop FBN’s customer experience agent into a member-facing agent that can answer questions about order status, invoices, returns, and products, including outside business hours.
  • Work with the CX lead to determine which responses the agent may send independently and build handoffs to a person for other cases.
  • Automate lending operations, including reading, sorting, and filing loan documents; spreading borrower financial statements; following up on closing conditions; and contacting new land-loan leads promptly.
  • Integrate lending agents with the loan origination system, nCino on Salesforce, and its controls.
  • Build sales and order agents to handle routine and repeat orders, follow up on stalled carts and quotes, return missed sales calls, and send SMS outreach that transfers warm leads to sales representatives.
  • Build evaluation suites using real cases and measure agent accuracy, safety, latency, and business outcomes.
  • Establish guardrails, monitoring, and incident response for customer-facing agents.
  • Own the customer-facing agent portfolio end to end, from design and development through evaluation, launch, and ongoing operation.
  • Make decisions about agent architecture, tool and data access, evaluation criteria, and launch readiness; coordinate with business owners, who approve what agents may say and do.
  • Set standard practices for building and evaluating customer-facing agents and mentor other engineers and business champions.
