About The Position

Sun Community Federal Credit Union is in the people business. As a Sr. Ag underwriter you play a critical role in supporting responsible growth through thoughtful credit analysis and sound risk assessment. In this role, you will independently evaluate agricultural and commercial credit requests, analyze financial and collateral information, and develop well-supported credit recommendations. You will partner closely with the EVP/Chief Credit Officer and key stakeholders to structure transactions, monitor portfolio performance, and ensure a strong, compliant lending environment. Success in this role means delivering accurate, timely analysis, supporting strategic lending decisions, and helping drive a high-quality member and borrower experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Economics, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial analysis, accounting, or lending; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong expertise in agricultural financial and collateral analysis, including complex credit structures.
  • Demonstrates deep knowledge of agricultural and commercial lending, including financial statement analysis, collateral evaluation, and complex credit structuring.
  • Identifies risk proactively, applies sound judgment, and develops well-supported recommendations that balance growth and risk.
  • Interprets complex financial data, industry trends, and market conditions to inform strategic lending decisions.
  • Produces accurate, thorough, and high-quality analysis and documentation in a fast-paced environment.
  • Builds strong working relationships with leadership, relationship managers, and cross-functional teams to support efficient and effective lending processes.
  • Clearly and confidently communicates financial insights, recommendations, and risk considerations to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Understands the broader agricultural and commercial lending landscape, including economic, commodity, and industry trends.
  • Delivers timely, high-quality work that supports lending goals, portfolio performance, and member experience.
  • Demonstrates ethical decision-making, maintains confidentiality, and ensures compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve processes, enhance efficiency, and strengthen the overall credit function.
  • Strong understanding of financial institution operations, products, and services.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and compliance requirements within the financial services industry.
  • Proficiency with business systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to analyze financial data, forecasts, and performance metrics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed, independent financial and collateral analysis for agricultural and commercial credit requests.
  • Evaluate business plans, financial statements, projections, and operating performance.
  • Assess collateral feasibility in relation to loan structure, market conditions, and industry trends.
  • Develop clear, data-driven conclusions and recommendations.
  • Support both new credit requests and ongoing portfolio reviews, including annual term reviews.
  • Recommend appropriate credit structures in alignment with Credit Union policies.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and timely written credit authorizations with complete and accurate information.
  • Analyze industry, commodity, and market trends to support lending decisions.
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis including budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and business plans.
  • Monitor loan portfolio performance, including covenant compliance and delinquency trends.
  • Complete annual reviews and maintain accurate documentation and contact logs.
  • Identify risks associated with each loan and recommend appropriate mitigants.
  • Assign and recommend risk ratings based on analysis.
  • Partner with the EVP/Chief Credit Officer to structure transactions and evaluate risk.
  • Participate in Loan Committee discussions as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support efficient processing and a strong member experience.
  • Participate in client calls and relationship discussions as assigned.
  • Accompany Agricultural Relationship Managers on farm visits and evaluations, as needed.
  • Support growth initiatives related to agricultural and commercial lending products.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new products and vendor relationships.
  • Conduct industry and market research to inform lending strategies.
  • Interpret and apply Credit Union policies, regulatory requirements, and accounting principles.
  • Ensure all work aligns with applicable laws, regulations, and internal standards.
