About The Position

A Service Sprinkler Fitter is responsible for the inspections, service, repair, and preventative maintenance of installed fire protection systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, and suppression systems, as well as fire pumps, backflows, and hydrant devices. Requirements

  • A member of local 496 in good standing
  • 2+ years of service van experience
  • Clean driver's abstract and valid driver's license
  • Journeyperson status
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Provide clear and efficient communication
  • Capable of performing physical labor, including carrying and moving equipment and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Majority of work is all above head
  • Able to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions such as climbing ladders, scaffolding, and high lift equipment, working within ducts, crawl spaces, and above ceilings.
  • Capable and experienced with using mobile devices (iPad/iPhone) for completing reports and deficiencies.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect fire protection systems throughout different facilities to ensure they are free of damage/leaks and provide adequate protection for the hazard level.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of deficiencies found with full solutions and material lists.
  • Test fire protection systems, troubleshoot issues, and suggest proper repairs.
  • Navigate on-site issues and manage time efficiently while ensuring thorough inspections.
  • Perform weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual testing of wet, dry, preaction, and deluge systems, including control valves, low pressure switches, accelerators, dry valves, solenoids, and releasing devices.
  • Inspect compressors and identify maintenance requirements.
  • Perform weekly and monthly checks of fire pumps (diesel and electric), confirming proper operation of controllers, safety features, pressures, fluid levels, and packing.
  • Conduct annual performance tests for electric/diesel fire pumps with flow meters or testing equipment.
  • Record readings from fire pumps and associated drivers, adjusting relief valves as needed.
  • Perform basic diagnosis of pump performance or driver issues.
  • Ensure pump installations meet current requirements and make recommendations for compliance.
  • Perform standpipe flow tests from the most remote hose cabinet during annual inspections to verify flow and pressure requirements.
  • Address deficiencies for all system types, including minor pump repairs.
  • Service and repair all aspects of fire protection equipment.
  • Relocate and add sprinkler heads.
  • Repair or modify system piping.
  • Repair or replace system components.
  • Complete internal valve and pipe assessments.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing on FDCs and backflow forward flows.
  • Conduct air loss tests on dry/preaction systems.
  • Troubleshoot issues with proper system operation, providing thorough solutions with material as needed.
  • Attend a wide range of service calls to address and diagnose issues with system components.
  • Identify and provide effective solutions, completing repairs in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, ensuring valuable quality service.
  • Be on call for designated after-hours time frames, receiving and independently resolving after-hours service calls for their specific region.
