About The Position

This role involves assisting physicians, physician assistants, and nurses in both clinical and surgical settings. In the clinical aspect, responsibilities include triaging patients, administering treatments, preparing examination rooms, taking vital signs, documenting patient information, and communicating with pharmacies. In the surgical aspect, the role requires knowledge of operating room procedures, anticipating the surgeon's needs, maintaining dexterity for surgical tasks, and functioning within professional and facility guidelines. Specific surgical duties include assisting with patient positioning, inserting and removing catheters, applying tourniquets, draping patients, assisting with hemostasis, using electrocautery, clamping and cutting tissue, harvesting veins, closing wounds, inserting drainage tubes, and applying dressings.

Requirements

  • Certified Athletic Trainer license and Surgical Assist license according to state requirements
  • OR trained or experience according to certification requirements
  • Medical background with strong verbal communication, teaching ability and good telephone skills are necessary.
  • The ability to work well with people and follow procedures required.
  • Attention to detail is required.
  • The ability to remain calm and be effective in emergency situations is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse in the examination and treatment of patients, and assists nurses as needed.
  • Triage patients and administers appropriate treatment under the direction of a physician or other medical provider staff.
  • May operate equipment for diagnostic tests or given injections.
  • Prepares the examination room for each patient’s visit; ensures adequate supplies and appropriate instruments are available.
  • Greets and rooms patients, takes temperatures, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient.
  • Documents patient history and medication and records this and any other pertinent information in the chart.
  • Phones pharmacies with new prescriptions and prescription refills. Documents this information in the patient’s chart.
  • Instructs patients on pertinent information essential to their care and treatment. Reviews handout material, videos, and medical instruction.
  • Complies with Osha and CLIA compliance while performing all duties.
  • Assists the surgeon, Physician Assistant and OR support staff as directed.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control, and is familiar with individual requirements and recommended practices of compliance.
  • Must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, and other team members, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and maintain dexterity sufficient to successful completion of his/her assistant duties on each particular procedure.
  • Must maintain a professional attitude with respect to dignity, privacy, and safety of patients.
  • Must possess the ability to only function within the limits of his/her ability, within the scope of his/her professional license, and within the policies of the facility in which they are working.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of specific equipment needed per procedure.
  • Assisting in moving and positioning the patient per surgeon’s directive.
  • Inserting and removal of Foley urinary bladder catheter per surgeon’s directive.
  • Placing the pneumatic tourniquet per surgeon’s directive.
  • Confirming procedure in the documentation and with surgeon.
  • Draping the patient within the surgeon’s guideline.
  • Providing retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique per surgeon’s directive.
  • Assisting in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, using and applying of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of ligatures, applying chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by the surgeon.
  • Using the electrocautery mono and bi-polar per surgeon’s directive.
  • Clamping, ligation and cutting of tissue per surgeon’s directive.
  • CV/ EVH assisting Only - Harvesting saphenous vein including skin incision per surgeon’s directive.
  • Closing of all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon’s directive.
  • Inserting drainage tubes per surgeon’s directive.
  • Selecting and applying wound dressing per surgeon’s directive.
  • Performing any other duties or procedures incidental to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and directed by the surgeon.
