About The Position

This role is for a Sports Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) at WSYX/WTTE in Columbus, Ohio. The position focuses on telling meaningful sports stories that reveal the impact of sports on communities, going beyond just game highlights. The journalist will be expected to embrace a multi-platform approach, including breaking news on social media, publishing digitally first, reporting live for streaming and television, and creating compelling content for various platforms. The role is ideal for someone excited about redefining sports journalism in a city with a strong sports culture.

Requirements

  • A journalist first, and a sports storyteller always.
  • Strong understanding of sports strategy and the ability to explain the game with clarity and context.
  • A passion for finding stories others miss.
  • Experience shooting, writing, editing, and reporting independently.
  • A digital-first mindset with experience publishing to web, social, streaming, and broadcast platforms.
  • Strong live reporting skills and the ability to react quickly when news breaks.
  • Excellent news judgment, curiosity, and storytelling ability.
  • A collaborative teammate who thrives in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • Sharp sports news judgment
  • The ability to tell an NPPA style story
  • Excellent technical skills
  • The ability to work well independently and with others
  • Must have and maintain a valid license and a good driving record
  • A minimum of 5 years of sports reporting experience is required
  • Experience with live shots is required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Live-U is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Enterprise original stories that connect sports to the people and issues shaping Central Ohio.
  • Cover professional, collegiate, high school, and community sports with urgency and creativity.
  • Break sports news across digital, social, streaming, and broadcast platforms in real time.
  • Shoot, write, edit, and present compelling stories as a true multimedia journalist.
  • Deliver engaging live coverage from games, press conferences, breaking news, and community events.
  • Build relationships with athletes, coaches, organizations, and community leaders to develop exclusive story ideas.
  • Collaborate with newsroom leadership to identify stories where sports intersect with education, business, public safety, health, politics, and culture.
  • Produce compelling content that serves audiences wherever they choose to consume news.
