About The Position

Join a team dedicated to strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility! Countryside YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic Sports Instructor to inspire youth and young adults through the joy of sports. In this role, you'll build physical competence, boost confidence, and teach fundamental skills — all while creating a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for every participant. This position includes a complimentary individual membership to the Countryside YMCA for staff who work a minimum of 16 hours per quarter.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled
  • One (1) year of experience teaching sports to children/teens in a structured setting preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of the designated sport
  • Coaching certificate or equivalent desired
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Complete YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of start date
  • Obtain CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of start date
  • Participate actively in all trainings, meetings, and special events
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Reliable, punctual attendance
  • Strong communication skills across all age groups
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to lift, bend, stretch, stoop, or push items up to 25 lbs to set up facilities, and physical ability to demonstrate techniques to participants.
  • Complete required training, and report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all participants through close, active supervision
  • Create a fun, safe, and positive experience that welcomes and supports every participant
  • Maintain program supervision in line with YMCA standards (ratios, attendance, etc.)
  • Partner with the Sports Programming Director to set goals and objectives for each session
  • Teach rules, fundamentals, and skill progressions while emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Design and adapt age-appropriate, progressive lesson plans
  • Conduct monthly equipment safety checks to ensure all gear is safe and in proper working order
  • Keep parents/guardians informed on their child's progress and upcoming session registration
  • Share information about additional YMCA programs and opportunities with families
  • Know and follow Countryside's emergency procedures, responding appropriately when needed
  • Maintain a clean and organized program space
  • Report incidents to your supervisor as needed
