About The Position

The Sports Editor is the lead staff editor in overseeing day-to-day local Sports news coverage, planning content, determining story placement, making photographic and graphics requests, assigning and editing stories, and supervising and coordinating reporters’ and sports copy editors’ activities and schedules. The Sports Editor also oversees selection and placement of regional, national and international sports news coverage. The Sports Editor may be required to design and paginate Sports section pages, or oversee their design and pagination. The Sports Editor ensures that highest coverage priority goes to local sports and recreational programs, activities and athletes.

Requirements

  • Working experience in the journalistic field, preferably with writing background
  • Strong writing skills and an excellent portfolio
  • A proven ability to be both self-sufficient and capable of working in a team
  • Demonstrated news judgement
  • An eye for detail along with critical thinking
  • A penchant for organization and multitasking
  • An understanding and interest in the use of computers and technology

  • Ensure highest coverage priority goes to local sports and recreational programs, activities and athletes
  • Interact successfully with others in a business setting, especially working effectively with the Editor and the Photo Editor and photo staff
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to meet customer needs, including effective interdepartmental relationships with the Advertising, Circulation, Business and Production departments
  • Work successfully with others in a busy, deadline-driven environment
  • Maintain regular attendance
  • Edit for accuracy, fairness, completeness, grammar, style, syntax, organization and clarity on deadline
  • Communicate clearly with reporters to help them develop coverage strategies and story ideas
  • Coach reporters on reporting and writing skills
  • Meet and enforce deadlines
  • Make quick, confident, informed decisions, act promptly and follow through effectively
  • Be familiar with current libel, public access and open meeting regulations
  • Have familiarity with the community, its history, its issues and leading personalities
  • Manage time effectively
  • Prepare daily and long-range Sports news budgets
  • Perform mathematical calculations
  • Perform research using a variety of resources
  • Accept and implement written and verbal direction from supervisors
  • Represent the newspaper in a professional, business-like manner
  • Coordinate large projects and series
  • Assist the Editor as appropriate

  • Cordially handle inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses
  • Treat reporters and other Newsroom workers with dignity and respect while defining and enforcing expectations
