The Montana Standard in Butte is seeking an innovative, digital-first sports leader to work with a statewide team of editors and reporters to drive coverage of local high school athletics, two NCAA Division I universities and six NAIA colleges. The ideal candidate will be a jack-of-all-trades. You’ll write, edit and coach. You’ll network and build relationships. You’ll organize and strategize coverage – including video and photo elements – on local high schools, two NAIA colleges and be part of statewide coverage throughout the year. You’ll use analytics to inform decision-making. This position will report to the statewide sports director. The Standard sports editor will also play a prominent leadership role for 406mtsports.com, the statewide sports website for Lee Enterprises, bringing together coverage from across the Last Best Place – including high schools from Billings to Missoula, the Big Sky Conference with Montana and Montana State, and the NAIA’s Frontier Conference including Montana Tech in Butte and Montana Western in Dillon. Butte is tough, proud, and unpolished in all the right ways. Situated on the Continental Divide, it’s a town built by miners and makers, where history and community spirit run deep. Uptown’s historic brick buildings and neon signs are home to a growing mix of restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and music venues. For those seeking Montana’s great outdoors, Butte, with a population of just over 35,000, offers front-door access to some of the best hiking, skiing, fishing, and exploring in the state.
