Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute Ski and Snowboard is an instruction-based program that teaches and improves skiing and snowboarding skills for people with disabilities. One of the largest adaptive ski and snowboard programs in the country, Courage Kenny Ski and Snowboard program (CKSS) provides more than 1,200 lessons per year at four sites across Minnesota and Wisconsin and is supported by 300 volunteer instructors. Our multi-week lessons and teaching techniques are consistent with Professional Ski Instructors of America Adaptive standards. Locations include Hyland Hills, Afton Alps, Trollhaugen, and Welch Village. We also offer additional one-time lessons at Learn to Ski and Snowboard clinics. We have seen participant and volunteer numbers grow significantly as we have developed new program elements, teaching styles and training programs. Our volunteer instructor’s skills and expertise, inventory of specialized equipment, and relationships with local ski areas enable us to meet a variety of client needs. Participants range from 6 to 60+ years of age with disabilities including: Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Spina Bifida, Stroke, Autism, Visual Impairments, and many other disabilities. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field or Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management or Bachelor's degree in Special Education or Bachelor's degree in Adaptive Physical Education or Bachelor's degree in Sports Management
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working with people with disabilities, and adaptive sports and recreational activities
  • 5 to 7 years in Microsoft Office skills especially Word and Excel
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association or Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross or Allina in-house BLS training (within 30 days of hire)
  • Minnesota Driver's license Upon Hire required or Wisconsin Driver's license Upon Hire required

Nice To Haves

  • PSIA certification preferred
  • Alpine ski or snowboard experience
  • Experience with charitable giving and donor relationships
  • 5 to 7 years in leadership experience, group facilitation and presentation experience

Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate the participant experience for the CKSS program, including but not limited to registration, equipment fittings, progress notes, evaluations, assessments, and experiential feedback.
  • Support and facilitate Courage Kenny Ski & Snowboard (CKSS) Volunteer Training and Continuing Education with techniques in line with Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) (i.e.: Train the Trainer, On the Hill training, Site Coordinator training). Safety, fun and learning as top priorities.
  • In conjunction with volunteer coordinators and training/education specialist, develop recruiting and retention plans for CKSS volunteers.
  • Actively engage with on-site program staff, lead volunteers, participants to boost on-hill effectiveness and program morale.
  • Conduct regular on-hill observations and lesson audits to ensure adherence to lesson progressions, safety protocols, matchups and equipment usage.
  • Utilize observed and written feedback to shape CKSS program operations.
  • Manage incident reporting processes for volunteers, site coordinators, and participants.
  • Utilize incident reporting process to round with CKSS team and analyze trends for improvement/mitigation.
  • Coordinate and facilitate adaptive equipment and operations training for partnered ski resorts/areas.
  • Work with ski resorts/areas directly to increase awareness, access, and share impact stories related to CKSS program.
  • Manage additional assigned sports programs year-round (Seasonal Sports outside of the Ski and Snowboard season TBD).
  • Manage assigned sports program logistics: contracts, equipment, facilities, schedule.
  • Coordinate assigned sports program specific communications.
  • Develop and implement assigned sports program specific recruitment strategies (partnerships and participants).
  • Manage assigned budgets and stay within provided budgeting guidelines.
  • Coordinate travel logistics for assigned sports programs.
  • Manage sports specific participants, volunteers, coaches and Site Coordinators
  • Recruit, retain & recognize participants and volunteers for assigned sports programs.
  • Design and provide sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities.
  • Manage Sports and Recreation services, special events, and programming.
  • Cultivate donor and community relationships.
  • Plan and coordinate community based sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate all programs.
  • Document program plan and data.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate special events.
  • Support program operations.
  • Administer program application process.
  • Provide registration information and fees to program assistant.
  • Coordinate travel for staff and volunteers.
  • Travel with youth teams to tournaments.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventory.
  • Provide ongoing leadership and training to volunteers and interns.
  • Serve as a resource to participants, their families, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support donor relationships and fund raising.
  • Promote program internally and externally, including media, partners, and community.
  • Develop marketing materials, catalogs, etc., with Marketing and Communications.
  • Present at conferences and events.
  • Participate in fund raising events including publicity, logistics, documentation and evaluation.
  • Interact and build relationships with donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
