About The Position

The Splice Technician 1 performs cable installation, construction, and repair in indoor and outdoor settings. This includes terminating fiber optic cables to expand or replace telecommunications networks, pinpointing and rectifying cable faults to maintain network integrity, and troubleshooting signal issues. The role requires proficiency in driving a pick-up and trailer, operating bucket trucks, and accessing various locations like manholes and using ladders for installation and construction. The position involves managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and frequent travel to project locations.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for US Employment without sponsorship.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High School Graduate or GED is required.
  • A valid California driver's license, subject to successful verification through a DMV check, is mandatory.
  • Familiarity with splicing fiber optic cables including proficiency in joining optical fibers to ensure reliable signal transmission.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work sites, work overtime, weekends, holidays, or off hours.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English as the primary language used in the workplace.
  • Proficient use of MS Office applications including Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; teleconferencing applications.
  • Functional use of common office equipment, computers, and office software.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and audible tones.
  • Proficient in driving a pick-up and trailer combination with safe maneuvering and backing skills.
  • Adept at using bucket trucks, accessing manholes, hand holes, and employing ladders for diverse installation and construction tasks.
  • Proven history of efficiently managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cable installation, construction, and repair across indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Terminate fiber optic cables to expand or replace telecommunications networks.
  • Pinpoint and rectify cable faults to uphold network integrity without causing signal disruptions.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain to resolve signal issues.
  • Conduct maintenance and repair work on fiber optic lines, including examination, testing for damage, troubleshooting faults, and splicing new lines to replace damaged cables.
  • Read and interpret fiber splicing diagrams, prints, specifications, work scopes, and fiber optic color code charts.
  • Perform outside plant fiber optic cable splicing, including ribbon fiber and loose tube fiber, installation of splice closures, unidirectional and bidirectional fiber testing, and termination of fiber optic cables.
  • Construct proper splice cases, ensuring slack storage and securing.
  • Execute ring cuts, install and mount FTPs (fiber termination points) and splicing cabinets.
  • Install and connect wires and cables to designated terminals, ensuring proper connectivity within the network.
  • Attach or detach hardware components to diverse structures as required for network installation and maintenance.
  • Operate mechanized equipment such as a bucket truck, excavators, and trencher.
  • Climb poles up to 40 feet and operate in bucket trucks with 32’ plus ladders.
  • Manage deployment and removal of traffic control devices to ensure safety in work areas on streets or roadways.
  • Adhere to and operate within the weight capacity limits specified by manufacturers for equipment and machinery.
  • Read and follow design engineer’s instructions and specifications, maintaining project scope and adhering to safety procedures.
  • Prepare engineering field notes and splicing sheets; interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps, and in the field with clarity and detail.
  • Ensure work is conducted safely and according to company safety practices.
  • Validate and conduct end-to-end testing for service provisioning on the cable network.
  • Locate and repair cable faults to maintain the existing cable network without causing signal failure interruptions.
  • Confirm accurate cable terminations on cross-connects, patch panels, and hubs.
  • Coordinate daily crew activities and work schedule, maintaining a safe and quality work site location, splicing rig, and associated equipment and tools.
  • Maintain project tracing information such as production sheets, time sheets, and customer-required paperwork.
  • Complete reports related to project status, progress, or other work details using computer software.
  • Take site photos or photos of work performed using digital cameras as needed.
  • Observe hazards and report any concerns or accidents to a supervisor or safety professional; participate in the investigation process as needed.
  • Understand, complete, and sign off all pre-job safety planning tools at the start and end of the shift; complete all required safety-related paperwork.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
  • Maintain vehicle/equipment pre-op/post-op to be prepared to perform required duties.
  • Maintain a clean driving record as defined by the current fleet insurance underwriter.
  • Travel frequently to various project locations and spend a significant portion of the workday traveling in a vehicle.
