Under a valid referral process, the Speech Pathologist carries out an individualized program of speech therapy, including assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, education, and effective communication to maximize a patient’s progress toward achieving functional goals. This role provides direct patient care within the scope of practice, seeking excellence by utilizing evidence-based or best practice techniques. The Speech Pathologist must have knowledge and skills to care for the cognitive, physical, and developmental needs of the populations and age groups receiving services. They are expected to be kind and welcoming to all, continuously monitor patients’ functional needs and progress, adjusting the plan of care as needed. The role involves counseling patients and families about test results and treatment options, involving them in goal setting and decision-making. Clear, concise, and timely documentation of evaluations, plans of care, daily treatments, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other patient-related communications is essential. The position requires integrity through compliance with insurance regulations, accountable billing procedures, and judicious use of patient resources, while maintaining efficiency. Compliance with hospital and departmental policies, quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control standards is mandatory. The role encourages innovation and professional growth through participation in educational programs and staying current with professional literature. Communication should be kind and respectful to maintain positive working relationships. The ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations is also required.
