About The Position

Under a valid referral process, the Speech Pathologist carries out an individualized program of speech therapy, including assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, education, and effective communication to maximize a patient’s progress toward achieving functional goals. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice, seeking excellence by utilizing evidence-based or best practice techniques. The role requires knowledge and skills to care for the cognitive, physical, and developmental needs of diverse patient populations and age groups. The Speech Pathologist continuously monitors patients’ functional needs and progress, adjusting the plan of care as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Responsibilities include providing counseling to patients and families/caregivers about test results and recommended treatment options, involving them in goal setting and decision-making. Accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, plans of care, daily treatments, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other patient-related communications is essential. The role also involves demonstrating integrity through compliance with insurance regulations, accountable billing procedures, and judicious use of patient resources, while maintaining efficiency by effectively utilizing downtime. Compliance with hospital and departmental policies, quality improvement programs, and safety standards is expected. The Speech Pathologist is encouraged to foster innovation and enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs and staying current with professional literature. Communication should be kind and respectful to maintain positive working relationships. The ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations is also a key aspect of the role.

Requirements

  • OR license in Speech Language Pathology
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (or CF in progress toward obtaining ASHA CCC-SLP)
  • CPR certification required by end of month from 60 days of hire and maintained
  • Computer literacy skills
  • Able to stand, walk, and sit frequently.
  • Possesses adequate reaction time to respond quickly to unexpected patient care situations.
  • Must be able to see, hear, read, and speak with or without assistive devices.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds to assist in basic patient care and/or to assist with office supplies, utilizing proper body mechanics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Proficiency in executive function skills, including planning, organization, focusing attention, flexible thinking/problem solving, memory, self-monitoring, and juggling of multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitors patients’ functional needs and progress, adjusting plan of care as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Provides counseling to patients and patients’ families/caregivers about results of testing and recommended treatment options. Involves patients and families in goal setting and treatment decision making process.
  • Clear, concise, and timely documentation including evaluation, plan of care, daily treatments, progress notes and discharge summaries.
  • Clear and timely documentation of other conversation with or in regard to the patient (e.g. telephone encounter or discussions with providers, vendors, etc.)
  • Demonstrates integrity through compliance with insurance regulations, accountable billing procedures, judicious use of patient’s resources.
  • Maintains good efficiency through effective use of downtime that occurs through patient no shows and/or cancellations.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, Quality Improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Encourages innovation by enhancing professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, in-services, and workshops. Keeps up to date on professional literature.
  • Communicates in a kind and respectful manner to maintain a positive working relationship with all health professionals, ancillary staff, patients, and caregivers/family.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations.
  • Serves as Mentoring SLP for Speech Therapy students at various stages of their education.
  • Allows observation by and provides mentorship to high school or undergraduate students.
  • Promotes the profession and Sky Lakes organization through participation in in-services to residents or other hospital departments, and participation in community education events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
