About The Position

The Speech Pathologist II is an experienced therapist capable of independently adapting interventions to meet specific patient needs. This role provides coverage in their primary setting and can also support other hospital, rehab, and outpatient settings with minimal to moderate guidance. The Speech Pathologist II takes on basic leadership responsibilities, demonstrates flexibility, exercises good judgment, problem-solves effectively, and collaborates with colleagues. They participate productively in department projects and events, and in addition to attending educational activities, they also provide in-service education to other staff. At Level II, the Speech Pathologist begins developing skills for student supervision under the mentorship of an experienced supervisor and may participate in department-level research activities with mentorship.

Requirements

  • License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP).
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Current CCC in SLP.
  • CPR certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience.
  • Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders.
  • Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments.
  • Previous experience planning and executing treatment.
  • Masters Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology.
  • Completes required learning exchange courses.
  • Able to provide services to multiple settings after being oriented and deemed competent for that patient population; this includes covering outpatient, rehab and inpatient areas in addition to SLP’s primary area of practice (i.e. inpatient vs. rehab).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous clinical experience.
  • Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders.
  • Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders.
  • Minimal novice experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations.
  • Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g. critical care, long term care, outpatient, etc.).
  • Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems.
  • SLPs with their CCC’s may provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Manage or mentor and provide advice/guidance/training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation, and patient care.
  • Provide services to multiple settings after orientation and competency validation.
  • Possible weekend rotations required.
