About The Position

Under the general supervision of the school principal and direction from a certificated Speech/Language Pathologist, this role assists in providing services for students in the area of speech and language communication. This includes developing pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and assisting in the training and use of augmentative and alternative communication.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • CPR/First Aide is required
  • Speech Language-Pathology Assistant Certificate is required
  • Class C Driver's License and availability of private transportation (mileage expense provided) is required
  • Basic principles of child behavior.
  • Speech/language pathology equipment, materials and procedures.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Language and articulation development, disorders and rehabilitation.
  • Issues involving language, articulation, stuttering, cleft palate, voice disorders and any other disorder affecting communication abilities.
  • General methods and techniques of individual and group speech therapy commonly used for students with special needs.
  • Deal tactfully, sometimes in stressful situations, with students and parents regarding health issues.
  • Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, fellow employees, teachers, and administrative staff.
  • Ensure that tasks are performed in regard to Individual Education Plan requirements.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Travel to multiple sites or locations to perform work.
  • Assist with the required therapy of assigned students.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information obtained in the course of work.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Speech - Language Pathologists during assessment of students; maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families.
  • Provide assistance in language development instruction to individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction by the Speech/Language Pathologist.
  • Adapt or modify instructional materials and/or equipment, as determined by student needs and abilities, for teacher use in the classroom.
  • Conduct speech-language screenings using screening protocols developed by certificated Speech/Language Pathologist staff.
  • Follow and implement documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Speech/Language Pathologist.
  • Follow Individual Educational Plans (IEP's) for each student to develop daily or weekly instructional activities.
  • Assist in maintaining student records, tallying data, preparing charts, records, graphs and reports. Provide recordkeeping for student files and perform related office support tasks.
  • Assist in the preparation of various teaching materials such as charts, pictures, word lists, and other related items.
  • Observe and report significant student behavior, behavioral patterns, and/or other problems to the Teacher or Speech Language-Pathologist.
  • Assist Teacher or Speech-Language Pathologist in maintaining appropriate behavior in the classroom and between classroom activities.
  • Assist students in the use of alternative communication methods and a variety of computerized speech and language communication devices.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, workshops and in-service trainings to maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
