About The Position

This is a PRN position for a Speech Language Pathologist at St. Mary's Acute care. The role involves assuming full responsibility for evaluating patient needs for speech therapy, planning and executing individual treatment programs in accordance with ASHA and SLP scope of practice, and keeping treatment skills upgraded through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development. The position requires performing job responsibilities in accordance with the program’s strategic objectives and goals to carry out organizational strategic objectives. The role also includes providing patient care, evaluating patient condition, establishing treatment goals in collaboration with the patient, family, and treatment team, and administering treatment according to stated goals. Delegation of responsibilities to Speech Assistants, re-evaluation of patient status, and revision of treatment plans are also key aspects. The Speech Language Pathologist will evaluate patient needs for medical equipment, order appropriate equipment, and instruct patients, families, and healthcare workers on its use. Participation in discharge planning, documentation of patient status and progress, and communication with interdisciplinary team members are essential. The role also involves instructing patients and families on speech language pathology procedures, attending meetings and in-services, and adhering to hospital policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality and infection control. Meeting or exceeding program productivity expectations, providing discipline-specific coverage within the Mary Free Bed system as requested, and adhering to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior are also required. Additional duties may include participating in orientation and training of new staff, serving as a clinical instructor for speech language pathology students, supervising CFY as needed, and participating in program development and/or research activities. The role also requires meeting or exceeding clinical outcome collection and performance/improvement goals.

Requirements

  • Must be available at least 2 weekday shifts/month (Mondays preferred) and 1 weekend/month.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
  • M.S. or M.A. in Speech Pathology granted by an accredited university program.
  • Licensure is required in every US State and Territory the Therapist is practicing or is in Clinical Fellowship Year.
  • Licensure requirements should be met according to individual State laws.
  • In addition, SLP-CCC is required for therapists in the following States per Medicaid billing requirement: DC, NC, WV, KY, MN, NE, KS, NM, NV, ID
  • Possesses and maintains BLS certification to meet department/program protocol.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Course for Healthcare Professionals.
  • Training will be provided within 60 days of hire if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes written treatment plan, and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals.
  • Delegates responsibilities to Speech Assistants as appropriate.
  • Re-evaluates patient’s status and effects of treatment.
  • Revises treatment plan as necessary.
  • Reviews revised goals with patient and family as appropriate.
  • Evaluates patient’s need for medical equipment and orders the appropriate equipment as necessary.
  • Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, patient’s family, and health care workers on its use.
  • Participates in planning for patient discharge by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations.
  • Demonstrates competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities.
  • Documents patient’s status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines.
  • Communicates with others to integrate speech language pathology services with all aspects of patient care.
  • Participates in conferences/discussions as needed and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate speech language pathology treatment plan.
  • Instructs the patient and the family in speech language pathology procedures as part of providing patient and family education including written instructions as necessary.
  • Attends various meetings and in-services as designated.
  • Follows all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control.
  • Meets or exceeds program productivity expectations.
  • Provides discipline specific coverage (following cross training) within the Mary Free Bed system as requested.
  • Adheres to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers and members of the community.
  • Supports program operations as assigned.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff.
  • Serves as clinical instructor for speech language pathology students and supervises CFY as needed.
  • Supervises, teaches and evaluates skills of students.
  • Communicates with participating universities regarding skill level of students.
  • Participates in program development and/or research activities.
  • Meet or exceed clinical outcome collection standards established by department leadership.
  • Meet or exceed clinical outcome performance/improvement goals established by department leadership in designated programs.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members.
