About The Position

Under the direction of the Manager/Director of the Rehabilitation Services Department, the speech – language pathologist is responsible for providing, arranging for, teaching and supervising speech – language pathology services through the process of assessment, planning and implementation. He/she provides advisory service to other professionals who share responsibility for patient care and participates in the development of the rehabilitation program.

Requirements

  • A speech – language pathologist must have a minimum of a master’s degree.
  • Hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence of the American Speech/Language Hearing Association.
  • Must be licensed to practice as a speech – language pathologist in/by the State of New York.
  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb.
  • Be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.
  • Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance.
  • Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in tracheostomy and ventilator patients, critical care and palliative care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides evaluation and treatment of speech and swallowing according to approved practices, policies, and procedures of the Rehab Department of Ellis Hospital and New York State law.
  • Demonstrates skills and abilities to assess and treat toddler, school age child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients when employed in the inpatient and outpatient service area.
  • Inpatient duties include evaluation and treatment of swallowing through bedside swallowing evaluations and video fluoroscopic swallow studies.
  • Provides approved documentation to appropriate authorities.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with all persons involved in patient care and/or hospital activities.
  • Assures financial viability according to standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates his/her commitment to professional growth and competency.
  • Promotes effective interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationships – professional conduct.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, annual health assessment, and licensure verification.
