Working under the supervision of a special education teacher, this role provides instructional support and assistance to students with disabilities. The SPED Paraprofessional will assist the teacher in implementing the special education instructional program, work with students individually and in small groups, and prepare instructional materials. Responsibilities also include monitoring student activities, maintaining discipline, observing and recording student behavior, and communicating student needs to instructional staff. The role requires the use of various equipment, including computers and assistive technology, and participation in staff development and meetings. Safety precautions and additional duties as assigned by supervisors are also part of the role. Specific tasks include positioning and lifting students, assisting with self-care, implementing behavioral strategies, working with students with various disabilities, using crisis intervention techniques, and utilizing assistive technology and basic sign language. Collaboration with general education teachers in inclusive settings and contributing to the team are also expected.
