A Specimen Processor I prepares and handles specimens received for testing. This role works under the direct supervision of a trained employee or supervisor. Responsibilities include preparing and handling specimens for testing, assigning specimens an internal tracking number (accession ID), comparing and verifying identifiers on specimens match the test order, ensuring specimens are labeled appropriately, scanning, filing, and electronically saving paperwork received with specimens, and transporting specimens to testing labs. The role also involves maintaining competency in laboratory policies and procedures, observing compliance and regulatory requirements (especially data security and patient confidentiality), maintaining ethical standards, meeting productivity and quality standards, and working with team members to resolve problems and implement improvement projects.
