About The Position

Turner & Townsend is seeking a Specifications Writer to serve as a technical authority defining how EV clients’ physical infrastructure is built, maintained, and scaled globally. The role sits within the Design Studio, which develops and governs the physical footprint of a global network of facilities, and works at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and procurement to translate spatial concepts into high-performance material standards. The Specifications Writer collaborates with Design, Governance, BIM, Engineering, construction, and operations teams to research material performance, close standards gaps, and develop buildable, legally sound, cohesive technical specifications. The role may also include SOX control responsibilities, where applicable. On-site presence and requirements may change depending on client needs.

Requirements

  • 5–8+ years of experience in technical specifications writing, architectural production, A/E contract document delivery, or equivalent technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and edit architectural and engineering specifications, including MEP and structural, for cohesive delivery.
  • Solid understanding of CSI MasterFormat, UniFormat, and SectionFormat structures as applied to corporate facility rollouts.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard specification tools such as BSD SpecLink or MasterSpec.
  • Experience evaluating material data sheets, testing standards such as ASTM, ANSI, and UL, and building codes such as IBC, NFPA, and ADA.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex engineering concepts into concise, enforceable standards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent technical training or experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Construction Specifier (CCS), Construction Documents Technologist (CDT), or Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA) credential.
  • Active membership in SCIP (Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice) or a similar organization.
  • Experience writing specifications for large-scale rollout programs, industrial spaces, R&D labs, EV charging infrastructure, or technical prototyping facilities.
  • Familiarity with aligning Revit model metadata, including shared parameters and keynotes, with specification databases for automated BIM-to-Spec workflows.
  • Familiarity with sustainable building certifications such as LEED and WELL and with green material specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Write, review, and continuously refine technical specification sections across CSI Divisions 01 through 48 to support evolving design standards and R&D requirements.
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and civil engineers to align engineering specifications with architectural materials and spatial requirements.
  • Audit active design standards, identify missing specification sections, and independently research and develop new standards.
  • Research and vet proposed products, finishes, and equipment for durability, cost, sustainability targets, and compliance with building codes and standards, including IBC, NFPA, ADA, ASTM, ANSI, and UL.
  • Create standardized checklists and review tools for project managers to evaluate external Architect of Record construction document submittals for brand and technical compliance.
  • Own and curate the studio’s MasterSpec/SpecLink cloud database, keeping templates current and accessible to production teams.
  • Work with construction and operations teams to incorporate field lessons learned into master specifications and help prevent recurring field failures.
  • Adhere to applicable SOX control responsibilities.

Benefits

  • Employees may be eligible for bonuses and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • The company promotes a healthy, productive, and flexible working environment that respects work-life balance.
