About The Position

EGS is seeking an experienced Specialty Mechanical Engineer to support the Projects Equipment Design Engineering organization at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The selected engineer will be responsible for the design and specification of specialty and first-of-a-kind mechanical equipment, including systems such as gloveboxes, furnaces, high-vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment. This position requires significant experience designing custom mechanical equipment and developing detailed engineering and procurement documentation. The engineer will collaborate with designers and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop build-to-print equipment packages and perform engineering calculations and analyses supporting equipment design and fabrication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the design and/or specification of custom mechanical equipment.
  • The requisition is open across CNS professional Levels 3-5. The attached labor-category table defines those levels as: Level 3 - Senior Principal Engineer: BS + 10-15 years direct experience or MS + 8-13 years. Level 4 - Associate Fellow Engineer: BS + 15-20 years direct experience or MS + 13-18 years. Level 5 - Fellow Engineer: BS + 20+ years direct experience or MS + 18+ years.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support development of custom, specialty, and first-of-a-kind mechanical equipment.
  • Collaborate with designers to develop build-to-print design packages for custom equipment.
  • Support the design and specification of equipment such as: Glovebox systems, Furnaces, High-vacuum systems, Metal casting equipment, Machining equipment, Other custom specialty mechanical systems.
  • Apply machine design principles throughout equipment development.
  • Support equipment design from engineering development through fabrication and procurement.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses associated with machine and equipment design, which may include: Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Structural analysis, Seismic analysis, Ergonomic studies, Kinematic calculations, Heat transfer calculations, Other engineering analyses required to validate custom mechanical equipment designs.
  • Develop detailed and accurate procurement documentation for specialty mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare equipment specifications.
  • Develop Statements of Work (SOWs).
  • Prepare equipment datasheets.
  • Develop design/build equipment specifications.
  • Develop equipment fabrication specifications for custom-designed equipment.
  • Produce comprehensive build-to-print equipment fabrication packages.
  • Develop and coordinate: Fabrication drawings, Fabrication specifications, Procurement documents, Engineering calculations, Supporting technical documentation.
  • Lead and/or coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams supporting machine design efforts.
  • Interface with engineering disciplines including: Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C), HVAC, Piping, Process, Welding.
  • Coordinate technical requirements across disciplines to support development of complete equipment design and fabrication packages.
  • Support development of custom mechanical equipment using 3D CAD modeling.
  • Utilize or interface with designs developed using: PTC Creo, SolidWorks.
  • Collaborate closely with designers in developing detailed fabrication drawings and build-to-print design packages.
