About The Position

Specialty Courts in the Massachusetts Trial Court are judicially supervised, intensive probation programs designed to address underlying behavioral health issues, which may drive criminal behavior and decision-making by individuals. The masters level Specialty Court Clinician is a member of the Specialty Court Team and conducts screening and assessment of potential participants, makes treatment recommendations, provides short-term case management, monitors treatment compliance and engagement, and translates clinical information and findings for non-clinical members of the Specialty Court Team.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited school or university in social work or mental health counseling by start date
  • At least three years of relevant experience in mental health field
  • Requires licensure eligibility in the state of Massachusetts (LICSW, LCSW or LMHC)
  • Experience with and comfort treating serious mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with Trial Court staff, colleagues and leadership.
  • Ability to work effectively, comfortably, and sensitively with ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse individuals and with people from historically underrepresented communities.
  • Highly organized and comfortable in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Self-starter; ability to take ownership of driving personnel development and improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of and competence in advocating with community resources and agencies that serve individuals, children, and families with behavioral health needs.

Nice To Haves

  • experience in crisis response preferred.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
  • Bicultural/bilingual competency is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical screening, psychosocial and behavioral health assessments and treatment planning for participants in various types of Specialty Courts across the Massachusetts Trial Court using evidence-based tools, including completion of intakes, assessing client eligibility for session, and ongoing case management and clinical needs.
  • Manages all responsibilities associated with identified mental health or recovery court session(s).
  • Through the initial assessment process identifies client needs and completes referrals as is appropriate.
  • Makes treatment recommendations for participants and assists participants in referral process and care coordination.
  • Builds linkages with and engages community-based service providers to help enhance the success of court participants.
  • Attends weekly court session(s), serving as the liaison between the client’s outpatient teams and the trial court, providing testimony, to the court on the status of each participant
  • Consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare team members to ensure that the overall health needs of patients are addressed.
  • Provides risk assessment and intervention as necessary.
  • When indicated, refers to and coordinates with appropriate emergency services.
  • Attend additional MHC and Recovery Court sessions as needed to provide both planned and unplanned coverage
