Specialist, Software Engineer – IBM ACE & ETL

Nationwide•Columbus, OH
•$95,500 - $143,500•Hybrid

About The Position

Nationwide Technology is hiring a Specialist Software Engineer to strengthen and modernize the integrations that support Commercial Lines. The role designs, builds, tests, troubleshoots, deploys, and supports enterprise integration solutions using Informatica ETL, IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE), IBM MQ, REST and SOAP services, databases, microservices, and API platforms such as Apigee. It spans real-time messaging, API orchestration, data transformation, and batch processing, moving policy transaction data securely and reliably among PolicyCenter, internal applications, downstream platforms, vendors, and regulatory consumers. ACE and Informatica ETL are complementary parts of the Commercial Lines Integration Layer. ACE supports real-time application, messaging, API, and service integration; Informatica ETL extracts, transforms, and loads data across operational systems, analytical processes, files, vendors, and downstream consumers. The engineer will develop expertise across both disciplines and build dependable end-to-end data movement patterns, from message receipt and API orchestration through transformation, loading, and operational support. The position also involves analyzing complex integration problems across applications, queues, APIs, databases, runtimes, and downstream consumers; supporting incidents and root-cause analysis; and collaborating with product owners, architects, analysts, testers, application teams, and downstream consumers. Success includes delivering stable, secure, well-documented integrations, improving the reliability and quality of flows, APIs, mappings, and pipelines, reducing avoidable production issues, and helping the team adopt maintainable integration patterns. The role is hybrid, with in-office work two days per week in Columbus, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; or Scottsdale, Arizona. Candidates must live within commuting distance of one of those offices. The position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization and does not participate in the STEM OPT Extension program. The role is exempt from overtime eligibility; associates may have on-call responsibilities after normal working hours and/or on weekends. It reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

  • Hands-on experience with IBM App Connect Enterprise, IBM Integration Bus, Informatica, or comparable enterprise integration and ETL platforms.
  • Practical experience developing and troubleshooting message flows, ESQL, MQ integrations, REST APIs, SOAP services, HTTP nodes, Informatica mappings and workflows, and data transformations.
  • Understanding of the Extract, Transform, and Load lifecycle, including source-to-target mapping, transformation rules, data validation, error handling, rejected records, reconciliation, and target loading.
  • Strong understanding of messaging concepts, transaction boundaries, ordering, request/reply patterns, error handling, and message traceability.
  • Experience with OAuth 2.0, API authentication and authorization, microservices, and API management platforms such as Apigee.
  • Experience with XML, JSON, data mapping, SQL, Oracle, ODBC, or similar database connectivity technologies.
  • Ability to analyze complex integration problems across applications, queues, APIs, databases, runtimes, and downstream consumers.
  • Strong communication, documentation, testing, debugging, and collaboration skills.
  • Growth mindset and willingness to learn new integration patterns, tools, and technologies.
  • Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or a related degree; technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates may be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or JavaScript.
  • Strong knowledge of the software development lifecycle and ability to solve complex business and development problems and thrive in a team environment.
  • Must be based within commuting distance of the Columbus, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; or Scottsdale, Arizona office.

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial Lines insurance, PolicyCenter, or related policy transaction-processing experience.
  • IBM ACE and IBM MQ administration, deployment, configuration, and production support.
  • Informatica ETL development, workflow and session management, source-to-target mapping, performance tuning, scheduling, monitoring, and recovery.
  • Apigee API proxy development, policy configuration, security, traffic management, and analytics.
  • UNIX-based batch operations, scheduling tools, scripting, and file handling.
  • Cloud, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, DevSecOps, or observability practices.
  • Experience supporting vendor, bureau, financial, print, reporting, or regulatory data feeds.
  • Insurance or financial services industry knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Design, enhance, deploy, and support IBM ACE integration flows connecting applications, services, databases, and external partners.
  • Build ACE message flows using MQ, HTTP, REST, SOAP, Compute, Flow Order, Failure, Catch, and other nodes.
  • Implement secure API and service integrations, including OAuth 2.0 authentication and authorization, token acquisition, header management, endpoint invocation, response handling, and error processing.
  • Develop scalable, resilient, reusable microservices and API-led integrations aligned with enterprise integration standards.
  • Configure and troubleshoot MQ Input and MQ Output nodes, including transactionality, ordering, transaction mode properties, and message delivery behavior.
  • Apply and troubleshoot Compute node mode and transaction mode properties to control propagation and transaction boundaries.
  • Design Failure Terminal and Catch Terminal patterns for recoverable errors, technical and business exceptions, retries, alerts, and operational support.
  • Analyze message parsing behavior and configure flows to parse, validate, route, and transform payloads.
  • Map and transform XML, JSON, copybooks, service payloads, database records, and downstream file layouts.
  • Develop ESQL using built-in functions, reusable procedures, shared logic, and exception-handling patterns; call Java methods from ESQL when appropriate.
  • Design and troubleshoot SOAP nodes, WSDL-based services, REST APIs, HTTP nodes, and service orchestration patterns.
  • Integrate ACE with Oracle and other data sources using ODBC connectivity, SQL queries, stored procedures, and database-driven processing.
  • Use Global Cache patterns to share and retrieve data across message flows while considering consistency, performance, expiration, and operations.
  • Use Message ID and Correlation ID appropriately for tracing, request/response matching, asynchronous processing, and diagnosis.
  • Apply multiple-message propagation concepts to produce, route, and manage multiple outputs from an input where required.
  • Use TRY-CATCH and Flow Order scenarios to sequence processing, isolate failures, coordinate actions, and create recovery paths.
  • Develop and maintain Apigee integrations, including API exposure, policy enforcement, security, traffic management, analytics, and lifecycle support.
  • Develop Informatica ETL mappings and workflows to extract data, apply business rules and data-quality logic, and load target tables, files, feeds, and downstream platforms.
  • Build and support ETL processes that move policy transaction data from Oracle and other source systems into operational, reporting, financial, vendor, and regulatory outputs.
  • Use Informatica transformations, lookups, joins, filters, aggregations, expressions, routers, parameters, reusable mapplets, and workflow controls.
  • Monitor ETL sessions and workflows; troubleshoot rejected records and data-quality issues; manage dependencies; and support reruns and recovery with restart and reconciliation practices.
  • Support production incidents, job failures, data issues, message reprocessing, operational reruns, and root-cause analysis across connected systems.
  • Analyze, develop, test, debug, document, and deploy software according to standards and best practices in an agile environment.
  • Apply secure software and systems engineering practices and DevSecOps practices throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Manage medium-to-large project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively; provide technical guidance to others.
